I am going to say this only once and it is my opinion based on my readings of scripturecatholic… They are decietful and illusionist, they love to give the impression something is backed and then on further study it is found to be different…
If you wish to make a point summarize with FACTS, that can be double checked… I encourage you to double check me!
You’ve proven that you also do not consult the actual documents in question but rely solely on men like Mr. Svendsen to do the “scholarship” for you. Are you interested in seeking truth or just in finding men who write blogs who agree with your point of view?

It’s amazing. I actually feel the same way in reverse. So…

If Svenson is the one whom originally accumulated the resources I use, and I am not saying he is or he isn’t, I know some of it is! Not all though! As I mentioned everything can be double checked at CCEL.org, Because you struggle to rectify the posts that I gave and a link to double check, don’t attack the source. Prove it wrong! [myfavoritmartin;1797257]Church, though I don’t doubt that their is a physicalness to it, in that it is called the “body” of Christ, it certainly is much more than JUST the church at Rome… Here for starter is what some ECF’s had to say about the “church” being something other than or more than the Roman church.
**
Tertullian
“Moreover, after the pledging both of the attestation of faith and the promise of salvation under ‘three witnesses,’ there is added, of necessity, mention of the Church; inasmuch as, wherever there are three, (that is, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) there is the Church, which is a body of three.” - Tertullian (On Baptism, 6)
**

You are only taking half of the whole picture of the early Church fathers and what “Church” means…and taking an eisagesis of Tertullian instead of an exegesis of his writings.
Here is what he says about the Church…

Tertullian

“[The apostles] founded churches in every city, from which all the other churches, one after another, derived the tradition of the faith, and the seeds of doctrine, and are every day deriving them, that they may become churches. Indeed, it is on this account only that they will be able to deem themselves apostolic, as being the offspring of apostolic churches. Every sort of thing must necessarily revert to its original for its classification. Therefore the churches, although they are so many and so great, comprise but the one primitive Church, [founded] by the apostles, from which they all [spring]. In this way, all are primitive, and all are apostolic, while they are all proved to be one in unity” (*Demurrer Against the Heretics *20 [A.D. 200]).

“[W]hat it was which Christ revealed to them [the apostles] can, as I must here likewise prescribe, properly be proved in no other way than by those very churches which the apostles founded in person, by declaring the gospel to them directly themselves . . . If then these things are so, it is in the same degree manifest that all doctrine which agrees with the apostolic churches—those molds and original sources of the faith must be reckoned for truth, as undoubtedly containing that which the churches received from the apostles, the apostles from Christ, [and] Christ from God. Whereas all doctrine must be prejudged as false which savors of contrariety to the truth of the churches and apostles of Christ and God. It remains, then, that we demonstrate whether this doctrine of ours, of which we have now given the rule, has its origin in the tradition of the apostles, and whether all other doctrines do not ipso facto proceed from falsehood” (ibid., 21).

This is a blow to your position of what a “Church” is, for as the above quote by Tertullian says the true Church has its “tradition in the apsostles” and moreover “all doctrines do not ipso facto proceeed from falsehood” which again is antithetical to Protestantisms miriad of doctrines on faith and morals.

“But if there be any [heresies] which are bold enough to plant [their origin] in the midst of the apostolic age, that they may thereby seem to have been handed down by the apostles, because they existed in the time of the apostles, we can say: Let them produce the original records of their churches; **let them unfold the roll of their bishops, running down in due succession from the beginning in such a manner that [their first] bishop shall be able to show for his ordainer and predecessor some one of the apostles or of apostolic men—a man, moreover, who continued steadfast with the apostles. For this is the manner in which the apostolic churches transmit their registers: as the church of Smyrna, which records that Polycarp was placed therein by John; as also the church of Rome, which makes Clement to have been ordained in like manner by Peter” (ibid., 32).
**

Tertullian is asking for those Churches that claim to be Apostolic to show their bishops—their pedigree of succession.

Can you show us your bishops? Can you show us your pedigree of succession?

“But should they even effect the contrivance [of composing a succession list for themselves], they will not advance a step. For their very doctrine, after comparison with that of the apostles [as contained in other churches], will declare, by its own diversity and contrariety, that it had for its author neither an apostle nor an apostolic man; because, as the apostles would never have taught things which were self-
**contradictory” (ibid.).

Again, this is a blow to Protestantism with all of its differing doctrines.

Lets put all those church fathers in context, now that myfavoritemartin has taken them out of context (in an erronius attempt to painting the catholic church a building)

Paul and Jesus tell us straight out what the true church is. The Apostles are the pillars and foundation.

1 Tim 3:15: if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth.

Housed in each person, the ekklesia:

1 Cor 6:19: Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own;

Jn 6:55: For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56: He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.

Jn 14:23: Jesus answered him, "If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

which are built up into a spiritual house, the church of the living God, supported by the pillars and foundation

Eph 2:19: So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,
20: built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,
21: in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord;
22: in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

Which house the truth:

Jn 14:6: Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.

This is the truth which the real church proclaims and houses. It is the house of the living God in communion with the trinity in reality. Each person a spiritual temple, each spiritual temple a stone, held up by the apostles and teachings, with the Lord as the cornerstone, which houses the truth, Jesus Christ. The curtain was torn so this reality could come into existance. God is not just approachable now, he is with us, he is around us, he is in us. The temple was destroyed and replaced with a living temple: the church.

The picture we can paint is a building housing the living God in catholic belief.

This is the church that is everywhere:

Acts 9:31: So the church throughout all - καθ ολης (catholic) Judea and Galilee and Sama’ria had peace and was built up; and walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit it was multiplied.

The Apocalypse is a revealing; revelation, not something hidden. I would suggest carefully going through with an eye towards covenant. It will show the temple, the gates, the foundations, the heavenly and earthly worship. The lamb that was slaughtered. What is used in the worship, how the body is used in worship. It reveals worship in truth and spirit.

This is the catholic church.

Do the protestants still maintain after all this that the apostles are no more? If so, then there are no more preachers, prophets, teachers etc. Do protestants actually not believe and refute Paul when he writes?:

13: For, “every one who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.”
14: But how are men to call upon him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher?
15: And how can men preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach good news!”

Sent ones are the apostles, and those “sent” after them (also apostles, through the laying on of hands) which has been shown through scripture that Christ and the apostles intended and practiced. (other thread)

Do protestants yet again not believe sacred scripture and refute it by saying there are no more apostles? If no one has been sent (and biblically we have been shown how) then there is no one to call upon, no one to hear the truth because there is no one “sent” to preach.

According to sacred scripture one must be sent, not just someone who decides he wants to. Apostolic succession. Do protestants really believe sacred scripture a lie? If the above scripture is rejected thee is no other conclusion.

We are all called (Corinthians) but not all are sent (in fact zero from protestantism, unless they claim a Pauline visitation from Christ)

It is clear that myfavoritemartin does not recognize the “laying on of hands” the bishops, priests (presbyters) and deacons of the NT to be part of the church and in fact not part of scripture.

Why have you guys removed these from scripture?

Just out of curiosity why do fundamenatlists think it is the “democracy of heaven” instead of the “kingdom of heaven”?

A kingdom and a democracy are two very distinct and different entities. The independant democracy concept in porotestantism reflects the early roman empire (and that of modern independance and democracy for example in the U.S.A.)

Biblically we are shown what a kingdom is in the OT and the NT, and in the early catholic fathers.

Why do fundamentalists project novel ideas and modernism into the scripture and the kingdom?

Matthew 18:20

20 For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."

It doesn’t necessitate a hierarchy, a handed down universal authority, an apostolic succession, a set of keys…
Since you view the church as a “body of believers”, what about when Jesus tells Peter “upon this rock I will build my church”? What does that mean?

I used New Advent to prove that you did not read the full document from which Svendsen culled the supposedly incriminating quote. Here is the link to the Stromata, the entirety of Stromata, Book VII, Chapter V which Svendsen quotes from:

newadvent.org/fathers/02107.htm

All of my quotes referring to the Church as one and to Church tradition are directly pulled from the actual document at the link above, not scripturecatholic.com. The document is exactly the same at CCEL, I’m sure. They always read word for word on CCEL and New Advent.

By the way, all of the quotes in RED are from Svendsen’s commentary, are they not?

So Jesus founded Protestantism on Peter? That’s the church?
Or do you believe the CC used to be the correct church until the scandals started arising in 700 A.D.?

Of course it was not the Roman Catholic Church, it was the Catholic Church. The name Roman Catholic Church was not used until later.
But it is the same Church.

I read this entire thread and you didn’t answer her question anywhere in this thread thus far.
You define “church” as a congregation of people and not a religious denomination. Correct?

Lactantius
Roman Catholics tell us that the church is a worldwide denomination led by a Pope, an institution whose legitimacy doesn’t depend on moral character. But Lactantius tells us:

"In the next place, Solomon was never called the son of God, but the son of David; and the house which he built was not firmly established, as the Church, which is the true temple of God, which does not consist of walls, but of the heart and faith of the men who believe on Him, and are called faithful…
(The Divine Institutes, 4:13,
Show me any Catholic document that refers to the Church as a denomination. And the quote by Lactantius merely states that the Church is more than a building. Well, duh. No Catholic would deny this. There’s a reason we speak of the Church as the Mystical Body of Christ.

**
Justin Martyr
Catholic apologists often claim that nobody in the early centuries of Christianity referred to the church as a spiritual entity consisting only of believers. The truth is that, although other definitions were advocated as well, the idea of a spiritual entity consisting only of believers was one of the definitions. For example:

“Moreover, that the word of God speaks to those who believe in Him as being one soul, and one synagogue, and one church, as to a daughter; that it thus addresses the church which has sprung from His name and partakes of His name (for we are all called Christians), is distinctly proclaimed in like manner in the following words, which teach us also to forget our old ancestral customs, when they speak thus: ‘Hearken, O daughter, and behold, and incline thine ear; forget thy people and the house of thy father, and the King shall desire thy beauty: because He is thy Lord, and thou shalt worship Him.’” - Justin Martyr (Dialogue with Trypho, 63)

Catholics say that the Church isn’t a spiritual entity? Huh? Again, you seem to be arguing that we think the Church is just a building. What?
**
**
Clement of Alexandria
Roman Catholic apologists sometimes deny that anybody defined the Christian church as a spiritual entity consisting only of believers during the earliest centuries of Christianity. The truth is that the term “church” was defined in numerous ways, and the concept of an invisible church was one of those definitions. In an earlier segment in this series, I cited Justin Martyr as an example. Here’s Clement of Alexandria:

“For it is not now the place, but the assemblage of the elect, that I call the Church.” (The Stromata, 7:5)

Ditto.**

Was the Catholic Church called the RCC after the book of Romans in the Bible was written? Or do the two have nothing to do with one another? :o

I see the problem here, read the original post by Eric.

Read carefully and you can see how the Quotes are used in a dishonest manner to attack the Church.

Like this…
Roman Catholic apologists claim this…
(Insert common claim by Catholic apologists to defend a certain part of the faith.)

Yet early Church Fathers claim this
(Insert comment by ECF which defends another part of the faith which Catholics do not deny that is taught by ECF’s)

Since they do not match therefore Catholics must be wrong!
Hah!

In this illustration, Catholics do not claim that where 2 or three are gathered Christ is there. The Body of Christ is the Church.

This is Catholic belief, this does not contradict our belief in a visible faith that is united in doctrine. Since Jesus taught one set of doctrines to his disciples, and founded one Church.

And where 2 or 3 of those people are gathered Christ is there, this is a Church.

I agree with those ECF’s completely, I just disagree with the dishonest caricature of the Catholic position which is presented to then discredit the Catholic position.

(before anyone goes off the handle this is an example)
This is like me saying Protestants believe that sin is unavoidable, so if I meet a lady I must rape her, since sin is unavoidable. Since this is wrong Protestantism is wrong.
It is easy to attack dishonestly, and not the proper way to discuss beliefs.

In Christ

read my posts, there are many definitions of His church, its just not the sole entity “RCC”
This is interesting, in fact it is a sole entity. There is no question you do not discern the true body of Christ. Catholics know the body isn’t a metaphor that fundamentalists make it out to be but in fact a reality.

So as those in Corinthians, whom Paul rebukes, (and Galatians and Timothy, and warns in Romans) you believe in division (denominations).

John (And Peter and Paul) tells us of those who seek to make their own church, “they went out from us but were not one of us”

Looking back at your earlier quotes, am I missing something here? How does the quote from St. Justin Martyr with commentary by Mr. Svendsen contradict the existence of the visible Church?

Here is the larger context of Ch. 63 (follow the link for the entire chapter, I had to narrow it down to fit into one post) in the Dialogue with Trypho, the Jew:

Chapter 63. It is proved that this God was incarnate…

And then, what is said by David, ‘In the splendours of Your holiness have I begotten You from the womb, before the morning star. The Lord has sworn, and will not repent, You are a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizidek,’ —does this not declare to you that [He was] from of old, and that the God and Father of all things intended Him to be begotten by a human womb? And speaking in other words, which also have been already quoted, [he says]: ‘Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of rectitude is the sceptre of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness, and hast hated iniquity: therefore God, even your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your fellows. [He has anointed You] with myrrh, and oil, and cassia from Your garments, from the ivory palaces, whereby they made You glad. Kings’ daughters are in Your honour. The queen stood at Your right hand, clad in garments embroidered with gold. Hearken, O daughter, and behold, and incline your ear, and forget your people and the house of your father; and the King shall desire your beauty: because he is your Lord, and you shall worship Him.’ Therefore these words testify explicitly that He is witnessed to by Him who established these things, as deserving to be worshipped, as God and as Christ. Moreover, that the word of God speaks to those who believe in Him as being one soul, and one synagogue, and one church, as to a daughter; that it thus addresses the church which has sprung from His name and partakes of His name (for we are all called Christians), is distinctly proclaimed in like manner in the following words, which teach us also to forget [our] old ancestral customs, when they speak thus: ‘Hearken, O daughter, and behold, and incline your ear; forget your people and the house of your father, and the King shall desire your beauty: because He is your Lord, and you shall worship Him.’ "

newadvent.org/fathers/01283.htm

I just don’t see anything here that contradicts Catholicism.

From the same dialogue (quoted from CCEL.org):
  • Chapter XXXV.-Heretics Confirm the Catholics in the Faith.
And Trypho said, “I believe, however, that many of those who say that they confess Jesus, and are called Christians, eat meats offered to idols, and declare that they are by no means injured in consequence.” And I replied, "The fact that there are such men confessing themselves to be Christians, and admitting the crucified Jesus to be both Lord and Christ, yet not teaching His doctrines, but those of the spirits of error, causes us who are disciples of the true and pure doctrine of Jesus Christ, to be more faithful and stedfast in the hope announced by Him. For what things He predicted would take place in His name, these we do see being actually accomplished in our sight. For he said, Many shall come in My name, clothed outwardly in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.'"[88](http://www.ccel.org/fathers2/ANF-01/footnote/fn43.htm#P4316_882505) And, There shall be schisms and heresies.'89 And, Beware of false prophets, who shall come to you clothed outwardly in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.'[90](http://www.ccel.org/fathers2/ANF-01/footnote/fn43.htm#P4318_882722) And, Many false Christs and false apostles shall arise, and shall deceive many of the faithful.'91 **There are, therefore, and there were many, my friends, who, coming forward in the name of Jesus, taught both to speak and act impious and blasphemous things; and these are called by us after the name of the men from whom each doctrine and opinion had its origin… **Some are called Marcians, and some Valentinians, and some Basilidians, and some Saturnilians, and others by other names; **each called after the originator of the individual opinion, just as each one of those who consider themselves philosophers, as I said before, thinks he must bear the name of the philosophy which he follows, from the name of the father of the particular doctrine. **

Was the Catholic Church called the RCC after the book of Romans in the Bible was written? Or do the two have nothing to do with one another? :o
Properly it was the Catholic Church in Rome. Just as the other Holy Sees were noted as the Catholic Church.

But the term RCC, or Roman Catholic Church was a pejoprative begun and slung by protestants, along with Popish, Romish and a few other tasteless rejoiners (many still popular today).

But sinse the chair of Peter is in fact in Rome I have no problem with that pejorative being adopted.

Edit: almost forgot my favorite pejorative, “Popery”.

A fragrant aroma before God. 😉
