Thoughts on the doctrinal statement put out by an Independent Fundamental Baptist College:

We believe the church was founded by Christ during His personal ministry and the church has had a continuous existence unto this day. We believe that the church is a local, visible body of believers, scripturally baptized and united on the principles of God’s word for the purpose of making, baptizing, and teaching disciples. (Mt. 16:18; 28:19-20; Eph. 3:21)
1.Jesus started a church in 30 A.D.
2.From this church that Jesus started in Jerusalem came other churches holding to the same tenants taught by Jesus Christ.
3.These churches “not called Baptist”, as of yet went into the dark ages.
4.During these days of the dark ages the protestants gave us our names of Anabaptist which means re-baptizers.
5.After the dark ages and protestant reformation the church that Jesus started is now called the Baptist church
6.Thus today the church started by Jesus is an Independent Baptist Church that holds the truths of the King James Bible.

These above principles are the stand and teaching of Bethel Baptist Church, and we are committed to hold to these truths. The time has come as Baptist to re-teach and re-emphasize that Jesus started a church in his earthly ministry, and that church is not a Catholic or Protestant church but an Independent Baptist Church.

Furthermore, any teaching beyond the 6 points above would not be a belief that we would divide the brethren over, nor would it be a point of contention. The subject of the church is called a mystery in the Bible, and indeed anything beyond the 6 basic tenants would be an even greater mystery. Some have said only Baptist are going to heaven, but yet the truth is that ALL who put their faith in Jesus Christ, whether Baptist or not, are on their way to heaven.

  1. So they use the Anglican version of the Bible for their Baptist denomination?
Interesting that they acknowledge the infallible authority of the Anglicans to compile and canonize the Bible, but do not belong to the Anglican Church.
  1. These “churches ‘not called Baptist’” that held to the same tenants of Jesus, how were they separated from the original church that Jesus built?
  2. If those churches held to the same tenants as Jesus, why do the Baptist churches hold different tenants?
  3. What caused these churches to fall into the dark ages? What are the dark ages (in their opinion)? What is “dark” about them?
  4. I’m still wondering why they use the Anglican bible as their source of all truth, but reject membership in the Anglican church.

The Baptist Successionism position has been largely abandoned by most Baptists. It was more prominent in the 1930’s after James Milton Carroll’s Trail of Blood came out. J.M. Carroll’s path of succession from the first Christian church, which was supposedly Baptist, through many very different and disparate groups has been picked apart by historians. It was maybe the last time a Baptist minister, Carroll, tried to promote himself as a scholarly historian.

That being said, the premise that Christ meant to establish a church and have it last more than the generation of the Apostles is something that all Catholics would agree with.

If the IFB Church is the same church that Jesus founded and the IFB Church exclusively uses the KJV then, logically I suppose, Jesus used the KJV.
But if aliens were involved…

Now now, Jesus was omniscient so He could very well have intended to establish a church that held to the truths contained in a printed text that wouldn’t be written for 1600 years and in a language that wouldn’t develop for at least 500 years. I’m sure there is a verse somewhere in the KJV that proves this. 😉

Historians would be stretched to the limit trying to find this group. Because the word ‘ana-baptist’ was a description, not a official group.
It would be like assuming that since people describe others as ‘jerks’. there must be some official ‘Society or Fraternal Order of Jerks’ 😉

Not dissing all Baptists with this, just the fruitcakes.
 
The term is tenets, not tenants. The person who wrote that nonsense was not very literate.

Maybe he was referring to the Parable of the Tenants (Mt 21:33-46)? Jesus taught that, right? He might have even taught it some to people who were renters… :whacky:
 
#3 These churches “went into the dark ages”. Can they locate the place on a map where they" went into"??? This reads like something a fifth grader wrote as a fictional story.😃
 
The real problem is that while they can claim that they can trace themselves back to Christ, the difficulty is showing that their doctrines actually match what those different groups believed. Just going back to the various Anabaptist groups (as pointed out in Matt Fradd’s blog post), they don’t have the same beliefs even of these groups from 500 years ago, let alone going further back 1500 years earlier.

If they can trace themselves back to the earliest Christians, what were their names? What did they actually believe and teach? Do present day Baptists believe those same things?

At best, it’s a very sketchy link unlike the Catholic claim which is extremely well documented and historically really unquestionable.

    • They teach this to college students? Really?
    • Points 2-6 show astounding ignorance of history
    • they don’t even knopw wjhere they got the bible
    • Any serious student of history would laugh at their rewrite of “history”

  1. First thoughts that come to mind

    Re: Points 1 & 2

    That would be #34 , I only took a snapshot of the the 1st 400 years. By definition, Our Lord’s Church that only He established and gave all hHis promises to, is the Catholic Church, and we see that in writing all properly referenced. His Church He says will never end. So are those Baptists calling Jesus a lier? To even suggest what they do contradicts the very scripture they say they follow exclusively.

    Re: their points 3-6
    • Those Baptists teach that to college students and expect them to believe it? Really?
    • Any serious student of history would be offended at that nonsense parading as history.
    • Protestantism (regardless of stripe) can’t disown or deny who they are. They are one more of the many Great Heresies to come along in history.

I have to smile every time I see that error, and it is quite frequent! I never bothered to correct it, but from now on I should.
 
Baptists aren’t the only group to say something like this. At least it shows an awareness that one has to trace some line of descent from the original Christians.
 
Simply put, besides the fact that Our Lord Jesus did establish he Church in the A.D. 30’s, everything in this “Baptist profession of faith” is total garbage. There is no proof for any of it. Just read your Bible and you can confirm that.
