The Churches dark past

Hello I’m obviously a new member. I’d like to introduce myself,but also ask some questions.
Code: 
  I've been Catholic for almost two years. My dad came back to the Church,and brought the family back to the faith. I'm living in Chania,Greece because of my dad's job. It's my senior year,and I'm attending a Catholic private school online. I'm taking some interesting classes such as apologetics,saints,ect. I got alot more interested in The Church and its teaching prior to starting my senior year. But my questions are more about the Churches dark past. When did the church start having major corruption with in? What about indulgences being mis used? As described by Martin Luther. Known Popes for not so christainly things? Crusades being "un christianly"? 

   I know information about those questions,but I'm looking for more detailed information on it. I'm sure most members on here are alot older so please give a bit of wisdom. I would ask my priest,but father peter's english isn't the easiest to understand. Not to go off topic,but before we moved we lived in Georgia...so imagine being a Catholic in southern public school. I have many friends who are baptist,non denomanational,atheist,agnostic,and many others. I usually get messed with by my friends for being Catholic,but it's all harmless. But from strangers or people who hardly know me it's shocking to them for me being Catholic. My American History teacher laughed cause a student made a priest molesting children joke. The same teacher went on a rant about the Church helping out Nazis escape the war. I've studied up on it,but is any of it completely true? I've studied up on the church is sex scandles. But on most statistics or any un biased information it shows Protestant churches have a bigger problem with it. I'm sorry if I'm rambling on,but I would just like some information on all the churches bad spot light. 

I'm going to start my Apologetics class in a few weeks. I just want to be able defend my faith better. Thanks for giving me the time. I would like to hear from non Catholics also.
 
You know that many other Christian Churches such as the Anglican Church, Calvinist Church, Calvinist Sweden, Lutheran Germany and in Orthodox countries many people were killed for not upholding their beliefs.

So does it make matter?

Problems in Christianity started from the beginning, as a reading of St Paul’s letters to the Corinthians will show. This was a congregation he founded himself and took a special interest in (although he could not be with them for very long). It was a train wreck.

I’ll leave the truth about the Church’s real goals with respect to its treatment of Muslims and Jews during the Crusades and the Inquisition to others more knowledgeable than I am. From what I understand, these historical events are rather more complex than past historians have related. Likewise, the Church’s reaction toward the Protestant reformers is something I have some knowledge about but prefer to allow others to comment on more fully. On the other hand, there is little doubt concerning some of the harsh statements made by certain Popes and Church Fathers of the distant past regarding the Jews, which reflect the prevailing attitudes and culture of the times. However, the allegations of the Church’s complicity with the Nazi regime during World War II have been disputed in recent years in a few major historical accounts. In fact, the preponderance of the evidence is in the opposite direction: that is, the research has revealed that the Vatican and Pope Pius XII, previously regarded as an accomplice, was actually an undercover participant in protecting many Jews from the Nazis. And similar recent accusations concerning Pope John Paul II are nothing but a complete fabrication.

I loved Chania! I was there 25 years ago. What a beautiful city! The harbor is spectacular!

I commend you for wanting to know more about your faith so you can defend it.

You have been given a lot of good sites to visit and learn from.

I just want to comment about corruption in the Church. There are great sinners and also great saints in the Church. Luther was correct to be concerned about the corruption, but he was not correct about changing the doctrine of the Church.

Remember, that problems started in the Church during the time that Our Lord was on earth. Peter denied him three times, Judas sold the Lord for thirty pieces of silver, and all the apostles hid, except for John, at the time of the crucifixion of our Lord.

Also, be aware that some of the problems and criticisms aimed at the Church are greatly exaggerated. We should not whitewash the sins of the past, neither should we allow them to be exaggerated in order to detract from the One, Holy, Apostolic Church.

Keep up your search. There is much material, and some of the links above will provide more than you may wish to use.

Please keep in mind one thing, as you search: the Church is FULL of sinners; that is why we are members. We wish to learn how to be holy…and then there may be some who may not have that wish. That’s one reason, statistically speaking, why we have so few canonized saints after being around for 2,000 years with billions and billions of “faithful” Catholics.

We are all sinners…even the Pope goes to Confession…regularly. Our “dark” past apes the dark past of humanity through history. But the Church, the Bride of Christ, is holy (one of the four marks), and she, with the continued guidance of the Holy Spirit, gives us the Sacraments, so we may repent our dark past, and try to be holy like she. We are still trying.

As quoted by William Rees-Mogg in The Times [London] (4 April 2005). Gandhi here makes reference to a statement of Jesus: “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other.
