If you are a member of the church of Christ, please sound off. Also, if you are a “Christian Only” you may say so, but please specify you congragation type…Diciples of Christ, Christian Church, Church of Christ.

If you are converting from the church of Christ, please state that too.

I am Catholic, so I belong to the Church founded by Our Lord Jesus Christ.

But I am still not sure what you are asking for.

Clarification: If you do not know what my question is then do NOT post on this thread please.

I am currently a member of the “Church of Christ” that came out of the Stone/Campbell restoration movement. I would not classify myself as very devout though as I do not believe very much of their doctrine.

Do you currently attend worship and bible clases? I know that the Stone/Campbell church restoration movement teach that attending worship is not optional.

I also found this on the internet if you’re interested:

I attend worship on Sunday mornings and some Wednesday nights, but my church is not so strict about Sunday and Wednesday nights. My church is so big that I can get by with missing a Sunday morning without being missed. As for Bible classes I go to a nursing home service on Sunday mornings instead, and on Wednesday nights I go to a foreign language class at church. I usually avoid Bible classes at church though because I graduated from a CoC high school and college and I have learned all the CoC doctrine I ever wanted to know.

I have posted on coctocatholic before, and I must say it is a wonderful website. It really got me thinking about some things.

You should consider reading Bruce Sullivan’s book “The Fullness of Christ: a Protestant Minister finds the fullness of faith in the Catholic Church”. I’ve read it. It’s very good. The last 3rd of the book is apologetics. I am currently discussing what I’ve learned in Catholicism with 2 other preachers. My FIL was an elder and 2 of my BIL are preachers. I wanted to become a preacher too, but DW wouldn’t let me. Bruce talkes about reading Karl Keatings book “Fundamentalism and Catholicism”, which caused him to seriously realize problems with his former faith. Bruce, like me, also talked with Benjamin Luther, a Catholic priest that also converted from the churches of Christ. I also spoke with Bruce last summer. He’s a bit busy these days taking care of family business, but he’s a great guy.

I’ve been meaning to order Bruce Sullivan’s book for a while now, I just haven’t gotten around to it.

Karl Keating’s book does a wonderful job of clearing up some misconceptions. The hard part is getting a CoC person to read it. I have tried to give that book to some people and they just won’t read it.

I don’t know what works for converting every CoC member, but I must say the historical argument really made an impact on me. The CoC was started in the early 1800s and there is absolutely no historical basis for saying otherwise. While I have had some CoC members try to tell me that there have always been hidden CoC groups, I have read enough Christian history to know that is simply not true.

The CoC message really breaks down by looking at the Christian practices from Jesus to the 1800s. They use all of these Biblical interpretations that did not exist for almost two thousand years. The problem is getting a CoC person to see that.

Hi

I am an Ahmadi peaceful Muslim.

I love Jesus and Mary but I don’t belong to any churches, as they represent Paul in my opinion rather that truthful concepts of Jesus and Mary as mentioned in Quran.

You could however prove otherwise if you thing I am wrong. I always welcome that.

Thanks

I am a Spirit Filled Born again Non Denominational Christian a member of Christs Church and am part of His body no matter who says otherwise. God has spoken and it is done.

You think just like a church of Christ person…always looking for the angle to convert the other guy. That was me up until about 2004 when I first walked into a church that was teaching about the Nicene Creed. I thought it was a lesson on the apostacy of Creeds. Some Catholics get this crazy too. But it was not a lesson against it. About a month ago I emailed the preacher what provoked him to teach about the Nicene Creed and then have us recite it. This is an edited version of his response without names or locations:
Um, I guess I did that series because I felt that Churches of Christ can be very illiterate about the rest of Christianity (especially Christian history) - most of our people don’t even know that creeds exist.
Yet these were the teaching documents of the early Church, and I think we should know and understand them. As a ‘restoration’ people, you can’t get much closer to that Chuch in Acts 2 than the Apostles Creed.

I think you would get more posters in your sound off, If you rephrased the sound off like:

If you protest the Catholic church and claim to be a Christian or belong to a church other than a Catholic church, specify your protestant or non catholic denomination or non denomination.

I think you will find more unity among different believing bodies of Christians. Prostesting the One Faith, One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church, under one Baptism.

Just a recommendation for you.🙂

Wow.

Please realize that A LOT of people have absolutely no idea what you are talking about… A LOT of people do not know the whole list of denominations and may not realize that you are asking for folks who are members of the Church of Christ which has different spokes on the wheel…

I agree Gabriel of 12, a rephrase my be needed for the owner of this thread.

The first Church I remember attending was the Church of Christ in Bono, Arkansas when I was five years old. I attended a Church of Christ in various locations ( twenty years US Army Retired) all the while searching for the truth. My wife and I met at a Church of Christ youth meeting in 1974. We were married by a CofC minister thirty years ago in Jonesboro Arkansas.

Now we are members of the LCMS. Our journey to LCMS was by way of RCIA. I had been interested in and drawn to the Catholic church for years. However the RCIA I attended with my wife was taught by a former Baptist minister’s grandson who had become a Catholic (after skipping church for many years) because his second wife was Catholic - his stated reason. He needed to become Catholic to marry her and so had his first marriage annulled so he could marry in the Catholic church. He knew little about the Catholic church and less about the bible. We were not prepared to attend the Mass Easter (Detroit). So out of respect and not wanting to ask too many questions and embarrass and insult our sponsor, we moved on.

When talking to a Campbellite remember to be ready to reference the bible if you want to persuade him or her that you know what you are talking about. CofC kids study the bible - religiously.

Cheers
Nick

Prior to getting involved in Anglicanism, I attended a church affiliated with the Independent Christian Church movement (part of the Stone-Campbell movement). Although I liked the people there and am still involved in an ICC campus ministry (called Christian Campus House), I found I liked the traditional Anglican Liturgy better.

I do not want to judge other people’s churches and I do believe God works through almost all denominations (I believe that things like LDS, JW, Westboro Baptist Church, etc. are cults not denominations), I find it too simplistic to sit there and say that since the Apostolic times, there has been no real church for the 1800 or so years between then and the founding of the Restoration movements). Although I believe parts of the Universal Church can apostasy, I don’t believe there could be a so-called Great Apostasy. It would violate Christ’s promise to St. Peter and the Apostles in Matthew 16:18. Although I believe in Sola Scriptura, I think it is a folly to ignore Tradition and the Magesterium (in order to help ensure a better interpretation of Scripture, we must at least examine [if not totally accept] the views of the Early Church, the Sacred Tradition and the historic Magesterium).

This thread is intended for people that have either crossed the pews of the Churhc of Christ, Disciples of Christ or Christian Church. The above salutation is typical when entering towns across the USA. Those of us who were faithful members of the Stone-Campbellite movement to restore the early church back to its original glory by using the bible only, that is the New Testament. Campbellites as some people call them - derogatory in their eyes - are particularly rigid in their solo scriptura docntrine and begin bible study as soon as they can sit in a chair, a baby chair even. Our oldes son has been attending bible classes “religiously” since infancy, 13 years plus. He is now in a CCD class and seems to know the Catholic Faith better than most of his peers. We have to stick a pin in his ego now and then but we are hoping and praying that he follows through his desire to become a priest.

My vocation I believe is to return to my Catholic roots to encourage vocations among our youth and anyone that is not hindered by an impediment to do so. We pray for vocations constantly in our domestic church. It is a wonder that Catholicism exists by the way most Catholics do not practice or better “seek out their faith with fear and trembling.” Many Catholics seem amazed at our knowledge of scripture. I tell them you just need to pick it up. Just don’t try to go out on a limb to interpret it on your own. I got hijacked into a conversation today with another Catholic that just kept on and on about it. But I just stood their trying to be charitable and listening to it. I told the lady that she just needs to read a chapter a day beginning with the gospels and add what she can. I used to read an average of 3 chapters per day following the refererences growing up in high school. I began serioius bible study at the age of 14 as a Catholic that just received my first communion and reconciliation. I was almost 15. Cradle Catholics know that if an infant is not baptized withn days of birth somethings wrong. I was 14 months old. Mom was a non-practicing non-denom that loathed Catholicism in her ecclesial community creating family. They began their own church a few generations back. But I remember participating in youth events groinw up at the age of 9. They planted their doctrine in my head that carried through the rest of my life causing me to eventually fall easily prey to their doctrin when I met my now wife, her family and church. It all made sense to me then… But I knew Catholic Teaching to some degree but no one that actually practiced it or defended it other than my father who was an extreme Catholic to the point of heresy in a schimatic group that claimed there is not a valid Pope.

So if you’re confused, then you missed the point of my initial posts. I’m not talking to you if you did not understand. But notice how easily the “Campbellites” popped in to realize what I was saying. Next time you drive through a small town, look for the small little sign that says “the churches of Christ salute you”. It’s scripture. The name is scriptural which is why they call themselves the “Church of Christ”.
thebible.net/searchingfortruth/

I’m looking for people similar to me on this forum. Not the flakes, the people that really know their scriptures and how to meander in and out. The basic fundamentals underlying the believes in the Church of Christ… Those who know it so well that the also see the Catholic doctrine like I fouind in scripture. It’s all there. And it nearly caused me to admit myself to a mental hospital for believing that it this is true then there could be no real church because no Catholics I ever knew practice the orthodox Catholic belief. It was Jimmy Akin that made me realize that I should never have rejected the real Church of Christ that subsists in the Catholic Church. I initially tried to convert to the Orthodox Church but my wife wouldn’t have it. More study caused me to fall in love with their theology, liturgies and practices. I also had to figure out the difference between the Easter Orthodox and the Easter Catholics. I was grossly confused. But it was actually studying the Eastern Church that brought me confidence to my faith in the Catholic Church in communion with Rome. I’ve tried to encourage my wife to allow us to try the Byzantine Catholic Parish in our area, but she jokes saying she doesn’t like the hairy beards. Truth is she’s happy where she is for the first time in her life and she doesn’t want to risk losing it by unecessarily trying an Eastern Catholic rite. I understand and am forgoing my deep desires for the sake of our family and vocation within our family. But if God has mercy on me, rather than looking at becoming an Eastern Catholic Deacon I’ll just move towards the Western Catholic Diaconate. So I’m digging in deeper to be more useful to the Church by working on some material to publish and ultimately teach solid catechesis to potential converts to Catholicism. Those of you that had poor brushes with poor catechesis were dealt a serious mishand of the faith. That’s ashamed. The Church’s teachings are really solid and work. So far I can’t break anything apart and I really tried really hard. Now I just work through it realizing that if I manage to break it apart into false, wrong or whatever, the world has been delivered the largest hoax known to man. It all fits historically, theologically, prophetically, scripturally, spiritually, etc. Scott Hahn said there is no need to defend it because its like a hungry lion that defends itself.

I grew up in the church of Christ, and entered the Catholic Church last Easter. I’m happy that my family raised me in the church of Christ, because I learned to read and study the Scriptures. Any theological question I had was answered with, " Read the Bible." My church proclaimed Christ our only creed, the Bible our only rule of faith. I knew practically nothing about the Catholic Church, but out of curiosity, I began researching what the Church really taught. It was ultimately the issue of authority that lead me into the Catholic Church. I started comparing the Church’s hierarchical structure with the Bible, and began to see that the Catholic Church was thoroughly Biblical. I am reading Bruce Sullivan’s book right now. I love the title, because its exactly how I feel. I finally found Christ in His Fullness.

panoikei,

I must say I am confused. This mission to “restore the early church back to its original glory by using the bible only” seems tantamount to the rejection of Apostolic Tradition. Whilst Tradition and Scripture do not, and cannot, contradict each other, the Church in no way condones an approach to doctrine through the scripture alone.
