I finally got around to seeing this yesterday and it was pretty good, a little predictable.

I think the movies plot is pretty realistic as well, in the movie its ‘the circle’, but its pretty clear, it is similar to Facebook or Google in the real world, and the direction social media is heading.

Wasn’t this 3% on Rotten Tomatoes? Looks like a stinker.

I saw it, and have a mostly negative review. I wouldn’t give it the 3% rating that Rotten Tomatoes gives it – I might grade it a C – but it wasn’t stellar or even really recommendable. I was surprised how long the main character went along with the various forms of invasion of privacy committed by The Circle. It has fostered conversation about Facebook and Google in my social circles, and that is a good thing, but though I do cite the film’s ideas, I usually include a line like the following: “the film itself isn’t much good, but it made the point that…” etc. It did have some good points to make about how allowing your privacy to be invaded even voluntarily can be disruptive for other people beyond just yourself, and so we have a responsibility to guard our privacy even for the sake of not harming others.

I had to look it up to discern which movie it is and it turns out I had seen previews at some point and had interest. Also, I would like to see it if for no other reason than it is Bill Paxton’s last film. :sad_yes:

I don’t know if it is also Glenne Headley’s last film as well, she may have had something else in the works at the same time, but it is one of her last anyway.

I usually enjoy Tom Hanks films too and as I said, it looked interesting enough during the preview I saw, so I will probably see it at some point. Dunkirk is also on my list to see, so I may not see *The Circle *in the theater due to cost. The way it is going, I won’t see either in the theater, but eventually hope to see both.

I saw it too. I don’t generally go to films so I enjoyed it, but it was absolutely predictable. I wouldn’t know how to rate it, but it might be mildly prophetic.

I think it is pretty realistic in terms of what social media will look like in the near future, naturally they are going to seek to have more access, less privacy, new tech like drones, which are getting smaller and smaller, enable all of that. I could definitely see a time when it would be used for voting and other such things as well as being mandatory.

People say they are frightened by this kind of world, but everytime new tech jumps forward, like a drone getting smaller, people think its the coolest thing ever, rush to the stores to be the first ones to own and use it…so doesnt appear they are that frightened of such a world imo.

I am waiting to read the book (still on hold at the library) before I watch it, but I think I’ll enjoy it. I like Tom Hanks, the topic is incredibly interesting, and I’m curious about how I’ll react to Emma Watson away from her Hermione role.

Prepare for culture shock.
