Surveys of the world’s Muslims find that most Muslims support democracy and freedom. Indeed, many Muslims complain that they are ruled by Western-supported secular despots who deny people their right to self-government. Most Muslims also support scientific advancements and seek more prosperity through free markets and global trade. However one reads the Qur’an or the historical record of Islam, no one familiar with this data can call contemporary Muslims enemies of modernity.

At the same time, there are some anomalies. Esposito and Mogahed’s analysis shows that Muslims fear that “Islam is under attack” and that the West is leading that attack. In addition, while most Muslims don’t support theocracy, they do want religion to have an important role in shaping their private and public lives. Even Shari’ah, with its draconian provisions against theft and adultery, enjoys wide support among Muslims, at least in the domestic sphere.

To understand these seemingly contradictory currents, it’s helpful to distinguish between two types of liberalism. One is the classical liberalism of the American founding. Call this Liberalism 1, which is reflected in such principles as the right to vote, to assemble freely, to trade with others and keep the fruits of one’s labor, to practice one’s religion, to tolerate different political and religious views, and so on.

Then there is the modern liberalism that developed in the West after World War II. Call this Liberalism 2, which is characterized by the right to blaspheme, pornography as a protected form of free expression, the exclusion of religious symbols from the public square, the right of teenagers to receive sex education and contraceptives, the right to abortion, prostitution as a worker’s right, and so on.

The data show that the vast majority of Muslims support Liberalism 1 while rejecting Liberalism 2. In other words, these “contemporary Muslims” don’t know the Qu’ran or the history of Islam.

Westernization, like Latinization, is just a ploy of the devil. Freedom, liberity, and rights are not cultural; they are universal realities which, unfortunately, don’t reign universally. Some want others to have less rights, like the Chinese Communists. And Islam is meant to be a theocracy; Islam is not a religion to Muslims but is a way of life. It dictates all things. So, yes, Muslims do want a theocracy; they want, specifically, an Islam-cracy.

Again, liberty, rights and freedom aren’t cultural. Nor are they political. A government dose not exist to impose rights, freedom, or liberty but to protect all three. That is why we have laws. That is why murder is illegal. But as soon as you culturize or politicise liberty, than you have just opened the door for abuse. And the history of Islam proves this. For example, dhammi aren’t allowed to have church bells or wine in public places. Muslims don’t know this, though, because their leaders don’t want them to know; it’s a technique known as brainwashing.

Stereotypes and misinformation. It is also interesting that terrorist Muslims oppose Christianity because they see it as something Western, something that greatly influenced Western culture. But, in reality, Christianity isn’t Western, nor did it simply influence the West. Christianity has influenced the whole world and it is actually an universal religion. The Church is not Western nor Eastern; the Church is Catholic, Universal.

They say they don’t support theocracy but for all practical purposes they do support theocracy.
They think they want liberty and personal freedom, but for all practical purposes they don’t.

As jihadwatch.org (run by a Melkite Catholic) has pointed out, they want liberty and personal freedom only for themselves, and to impose their religion on the world.
 
A long time ago I read a book about Islamaphobia, written by a Muslim, that I soon realized was simply crazy (and this was back in my Muslim days too). One part I’ll never forget was the author, in big bold capital letters, wrote:

SECULAR HUMANISM = RACISM
