I have been feeling nostaligic lately for the Cartoon Network of my youth and wanted to see if anyone wants to discuss. In particular, anyone wants to discuss shows from the suppoed Golden Age of Cartoon Network (late 90’s-early 2000s)?

I’d have to say my favorite shows were 1. Ed, Edd, n’ Eddy, 2. Courage the Cowardly Dog, and 3. The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. Looking back, I am starting to think that these shows are the lost keys to my personality and my sense of humor. I find it strange that Ed, Edd, n’ Eddy is not more recognized as the masterpiece that it was. I remember my mom always hated that I was so in love with that show, but, I guess that was probably because she thought the animation was weird. I found it unique and it was so relatable. The creator sought out to create a show that captures the spirit of pre-teen childhood and it worked. I’ve actually re-watched some episodes and they are even more entertaining as an adult. The one-liners, the characters, the slapstick is just so good.

On the other hand, that one episode of Courage the Cowardly dog with King Ramses still freaks me out to this day. I remember as a kid getting excited that Courage was coming on and then quickly changing the channel when it showed that the episode was “King Ramses’ Curse.” I just looked up the episode on Google Images and it sent a shiver down my spine.

I’d say my favorite cartoons of that era match up with yours, although I didn’t exactly grow up when these shows were in their prime. I’ve heard that nostalgia usually kicks in after a certain period of time after the era.

I think what made King Rameses scary to many was it’s distinct animation style that made it seem “off” so to speak

From what I’ve read, people say the CGI that made King Ramses was pretty bad, but it actually had the right effect. The movements of the guy were really off.

Courage was such a unique show both in style and concept. I wonder who’d come up with such a thing.

Ed, Edd, n’ Eddy was pretty unique in art style and that jazz music playing in the background, but, it had a lot of classic cartoon elements and was very much like that time’s Three Stooges.

Sometimes I wonder if The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy are the reason why I have such a messed-up sense of humor today.

I liked being able to catch Dexter’s Laboratory and Muppet Show reruns.

Classic Cartoons for me date from the mid 1930’s-mid1960’s.
Anything after that seems really odd - except for maybe Scooby Doo!

Gosh, to me classic Cartoons are Looney Toons, the Flintstones, and Tom and Jerry.

I love the Bugs Bunny ones with Daffy Duck about Duck Season vs Rabbit Season.
I love the Bugs Bunny episode with Finster, the bank robber disguised as a baby, “Believe me Finster, this hurts you more than it does me!”

I also like the one where Elmer is a waiter at a fancy Hollywood restaurant and Humphrey Bogart wants rabbit.

those are the best! I remember the Hollywood restaurant cartoon also!

When we still had cable, I used to watch Dexter’s Laboratory, and I also liked Adventure Land on Cartoon Network. I thought that that cartoon was rather bizarre! 😛

I also liked to watch The Transformers, and also Jem on Cartoon Network, even though I used to watch Jem when it was first on in the late 80’s on local TV.

When I watched it over again on Cartoon Network, it was like watching it for the first time, because I didn’t remember any of the episodes.

I used to watch Jem back then in the 80’s, when I would be getting ready to go to work, and it was on at some really early time of the morning, like either 6 or 6:30 a.m.

Can’t believe nobody’s mentioned POWERPUFF GIRLS yet. I loved that one. Also Dexter’s Lab, Johnny Bravo, Ed, Ed and Eddy, and Cow and Chicken. My mom hated all those shows but my dad loved them so she had to let us watch lol.

Dear Mary Gail,

I agree entirely with this post! 🙂

For many of us, Bugs Bunny was the introduction to what literary scholars call the Trickster archetype.

As for Cartoon Network, I remember a feature by the name of “2 Stupid Dogs” which used to be quite amusing, but very variable in quality.

For me, I’d say PPG, Dexter’s Lab, Ed Edd n Eddy, and Courage. I also liked Billy and Mandy but I don’t think that counts as a golden age CN show. That’s more silver age imo.

“Of, course you know, this means war.”
“Open up! Open the door! [aside to audience] You’ll notice I didn’t say ‘Richard’.”
“I will pet him, and squeeze him, and I will call him George.”
“Spike’s my hero, because he’s so big and strong!”
“I knew I shoulda taken that left toin at Albakoiky.”
“Ah hate you!”
“Train leaving on track five for Anaheim, Azusa and Cu-camonga!”
Abraca-pocus!..Hocus-cadabra!..Newport News!…Oh, I can do better than that: Walla Walla Washington!

Classics.

Bugs Bunny introduced me to Wagner… “What’s Opera, Doc?”

Bugs impersonating Leopold Stokowski.

“The Rabbit of Seville”-- “How dooooooo! Welcome to my shop! Let me cut your mop!Let me shave your crop! Daintily… daintily. Hey, youuuuuuu! Don’t look so perplexed. Why must you be vexed? Can’t you see you’re next? Yes, you’re next… you’re so next!”

“You’re so next” is a phrase we use often in my house.

I also like “Pen gu wins come from the South Pole, SOUTH POLE!! Oooh I’m dyin’!!”

I was born in 1988 I am 29 years of age and I remember some of the Hanna-Barbera cartoons from reruns which I did see in fact on Cartoon Network. I also remember from the 1990s such Classics as Dexter’s Laboratory the original Powerpuff Girls and I’m very disappointed in the reboot, Johnny Bravo which I still find hard-pressed to believe his for kids and cartoon cartoon and they used to hold something else too but I don’t remember. Anyone remember the “no tip” one? That was disturbing. I don’t know how they would have picked that up as a series. I didn’t really watch Ed Ed and Eddy but I had friends that liked it now The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy was good but kind of dark and Courage the Cowardly Dog is a bit Misnamed because courage was very courageous. I didn’t watch it when it was on which was a big mistake but Time Squad was a really good show. I know I’m not that old hello I’m starting to feel it but I’m feeling old but Nostalgia is good thanks for the Post
