I was reading something somewhere that to be a proper catholic, and to remain in a state of grace, you have to attend mass on Sunday.

I was just wondering if it is possible to fulfill this requirement on another day of the week? For example the Saturday Vigil or daily mass? Does it have to be the Sunday mass or will any mass do so long as I go at least once a week?

Thanks

Saturday evening (not Saturday morning though) fulfills the Sunday obligation. Your Sunday obligation is not fulfilled by going any of the other days (though highly recommended).

In relation to the need for attending weekly Mass, I like what Marthe Robin said: ‘Mass is not an obligation, it is a necessity.’ (Or something to that effect).

Your title to this thread suggests a bit of confusion; there is no weekly “communion requirement”, but a requirement to attend mass. One need not receive communion at mass, especially if one is aware of mortal sin.

The weekly requirement requires attending mass on Saturday evening, or all day Sunday. This cannot be replaced by a weekday mass, but if it is impossible to attend Sunday mass, due to extreme distance, illness, etc, then the requirement to attend mass is dispensed.

There is a requirement to receive Eucharist once a year, but this is separate from attending Sunday Mass.

Even Saturday evening mass does not fulfill the obligation if there is no impediment to attending the Sunday mass. In other words, you cannot regularly substitute the Saturday evening mass for the Sunday mass.

This is erroneous.

Totally wrong. Mind you, to be fair, when the Saturday pm Mass first came in, it was explained as a way for those who couldn’t come on Sunday (hospital staff for instance).

But now it is a recognised way of fulfilling the obligation.

In fact,in some churches, there simply wouldn’t be enough room to fit everyone in otherwise.

This is 100% incorrect. No where in Canon Law does it require a person to have a sufficient “excuse” in order to licitly fulfill their Sunday obligation on a Saturday evening.
