In Roman Catholicism we do the confirmation at around 15 years old generally and i am going to do it in a few months. We choose a name of a saint and we are supposed to be close with this saint after the confirmation. I would ask, is it a bit of a stupid idea to just choose the saint because you like his name or should it be a combination of both, liking the name and your personal connection with them? Bearing in mind it’s not like it is a name everyone is going to call you by (unless you want it to be)

Ideally you should have a personal connection to the saint.

Having said that, when I was 14 I picked a confirmation saint largely because I liked her name. Felt no connection to her through most of my life, and as an adult, had some guilt that I had chosen a saint so seemingly irresponsibly.

Then all of a sudden the last couple years she became a big presence in my life.
For the big finish, the priest from a church named after her ended up being the one conducting my husband’s funeral service.
Sometimes saints choose you.

Sometimes saints choose you
Saint stalkers i guess

Saint stalkers and what to do about them

It’s true, somehow a connection is made and perhaps you’re liking the name is such a connection. Why not read up about the saint and see how you feel afterwards. 🙂

You can make a choice, when is your Birthday or Baptism day? that saint are usually chosen, you can also choose a saint, according to your state, of life ,profession etc

I probably went about it the wrong way. I can’t swear to it, as I was 11 years old when I took my sponsor’s name, who happened to be my older brother, and happened to have the first name of the most famous male saint this side of Dublin.

I think I did it more to honor my brother, than anything else. This is why I said I probably went about it the wrong way. I never felt a special attachment to Saint Patrick, but I had to pick someone. Was that a sin, I wonder?

Even if it’s just the name that catches your eye, look him or her up afterwards and see if you connect at all with their personal history, or at least get to know them a bit.

A deep relationship would of course be great, but to be honest a lot of people your age probably haven’t developed that yet. I chose Peter primarily because it was my grandfather’s name, but there are times when I connect with the apostle.

When I choose my Saint Name, I really didn’t know many Saints, other than the Apostles and others in the Bible Sts. Paul, Mark, Luke, etc.

So I choose Mark because I thought his name sounded cool, he wrote a Gospel, and the Catholic High School was named after him.

I don’t think anything involving Holy Saint Patrick could ever be a sin. He probably helped you in ways you don’t even realize. Also, nothing wrong with wanting to honor your sponsor/ brother.
