The Corithians: Your Church's Problems Are Nothing Compared To Theirs

If you ever feel like your church is in terrible shape or that these times are just horrible, consider this:

The Church in Corith, when Paul was writing to them, was a complete utter mess. No one was following the rite. Mostly everyone was recieving Holy Communion in mortal sin. Sexual sins were committed at Mass. Sexual sins were also very prevelant among the parishioners. False prophets were confusing the Christians by preaching different gospels. Certain women would interupt the Mass to give long and dull false prophecies and revelations. No one was charitable. Some people were worshipping idols during the Mass. A lot of Corithians either didn’t know the Faith, didn’t understand it, or didn’t believe it. Some Corithians doubted Paul was called by the Lord. Others weren’t being contrite during Confession. And heresies were cropping up left and right in the Church at Corith. To make matters worse, the crisis at Corith was still going on even by the time Clement had been elected Pope - that is roughly 30 years of crisis.

Ouch! That’s…pretty bad. But the consider the state of undress many people show up in to Church, inciting lustful thoughts, consider the wandering minds, the lack of attentiveness, worshipping our day-to-day idols instead of the Lord. Consider the many who still do recieve the Most Blessed Sacrament in a state of mortal sin, and of the few who do make confessions, surely less make them with truly contrite hearts. How many Catholics can say they know the faith, are properly Catechised? How many self proclaimed Catholics support abortion and other abominations? How many priests put their own message into the Mass, and fail to teach faithfully? (The answer, even if there is only one case, still rings “too many”) Would it be uncharitable to question the charity of the masses?

The errors of the church abroad may not be as severe as those in Corinth, but they’ve spread the world over. At very least, the interupting is spared us, taken up proudly by those Pentacostals and Charismatics!

Wow! That is awful! And despite all of this, the Faith still spread. It is just amazing and goes to show that God can overcome all problems. Excellent post, Eucharisted.

Father Manning once commented that he gets discouraged when he reads of the Church at Jerusalem where all shared. He said the cure was to read of the Church at Corinth.
