Did God the Father ask our Lord Jesus Christ to die on the cross or did Jesus freely chose to die on the cross, for love of humanity and love of God the Father?

No quick and easy anwer here. Read and reflect on the story of Abraham and Isaac.

In the agony in the garden, Jesus understands that the “cup” of suffering He must face is His Father’s will, and He freely accepts it out of love and obedience. Read John 10:18 as well.

This is true of course, of Jesus Christ as man. As a member of the Trinity he is God and undergoes the same suffering. Which is a paradox and a mystery.

I am going to say both. God the Father and God the Son are both God. 🙂
God the Son died freely and chose to freely go to the Cross.

Both. Because the son and the father’s wills are always aligned.

It is not either/or, but both/and. However, this must be understood in the light of Catholic teaching, not the reformed idea that God punished His innocent Son so as to acquit the guilty, the so-called “penal substitution.” That thinking makes God unjust. Not so!

However it happened, I think the more challenging question to ask is, when was Jesus asked if he would die on the cross?

The only answer that makes sense to me, is before the creation of the universe began. Had Jesus said no, then I don’t believe the creation of the universe would have happened.

Somehow, the creation of the universe hangs and depends on Jesus agreeing to his suffering in advance; should mankind fall into sin.

Just some thoughts,
