I have meant to ask this question for years – since I was an altar boy at Latin Masses in the 60s and before – and it just came back to me now:
Why is the horizontal beam on the cross on the back of the chasauble broken (i.e., instead of being horizontal, it forms a widely spread “v”)? Does this type of cross design have a formal name or is there any particular history to it? Thank you for your help and God bless!
