The Cross on TLM Chasaubles

I have meant to ask this question for years – since I was an altar boy at Latin Masses in the 60s and before – and it just came back to me now:
Why is the horizontal beam on the cross on the back of the chasauble broken (i.e., instead of being horizontal, it forms a widely spread “v”)? Does this type of cross design have a formal name or is there any particular history to it? Thank you for your help and God bless!
 
This is only on the gothic chasuble, and it originated because of the placement of the seams.
