Is there a book or website or something that explains the Catholic historical perspective on the crusades? I realize that a lot of “history” that people claim is true is misconstrued and based on fallacy, but where is the Catholic response? Something on the Inquisition would be helpful as well.

And… discuss.

It’s not a ‘Catholic’ book, per se, but I found the "Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam and the Crusades’ by Robert Spencer to be a very accurate and truthful history … of course, as the title says, it’s politically incorrect and doesn’t kowtow to the whole ‘all religions are the same’ equivalency stuff that is so prevalent these days ;).

As such, Spencer is derided by many as a biased, bigoted Muslim-hater… as if stating the plain, verifiable truth about the spread of Islam and the retaliatory Crusades were hateful .

I’m also interested to know if there are any good, Catholic histories of the Crusades.

God bless you!

The politically incorrect guide to Islam ( and the crusades).

I have this, but have not read it yet. Has anyone here read it?

It is written by a Catholic, and seems to have good reviews. From what I can gather, The writer has written a lot on Islam, and is very knowledgeable in this area.

Wow, great stuff. Amazon is also for some reason giving me the entire text of “The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades)” for free… I think also in the same area “How The Catholic Church Built Western Civilization” would be a good book to learn about the history of the Church. Thanks again for the quick and helpful responses, God Bless!

Are there any more extensive articles or books on the Inquisition?

The Inquisition lasted for hundreds of years.

TONS of stuff written about it.

The question is: how accurate is the information.
Haha good point. How about, “Are there any extensive contemporary article’s or book’s that refute the myths of the Inquisitions that are slung around by anti-Catholics?”

I found Morris Bishop’s “The Middle Ages” section on the Crusades to be quite well-written. Actually, the whole book is fantastic. I loved the “Age of Faith” chapter which details a lot of the beliefs and practices in Christendom. It’s really a delightful read and the English alone is fun to read (if that makes sense - I mean that Bishop has such a great command of the English language that his book is a pleasure to read for the language alone).

I would not bother with Robert Spencer - he’s the intellectual equivalent of a Chick tract.

See the following article by Thomas F. Madden. Madden make a clear case for the Crusades being a defensive war against the aggression of Islam.

What really happened? Well, some 180 years of history was eaten up, and becuase of them, everyone think Christians are so “violent”.

re: inquisition

“Inquisition” by Edward Peters.

Contains the most recent scholarly research on the subject. It effectively refutes the “Black Legend” that has for centuries been used to libel the Church.

I’ve read it and highly recommend it.

I’m also reading, “1453: The Holy War for Constantinople and The Clash of Islam and the West” by Roger Crowley. From what I’ve read so far, I’d recommend it. I’m about 1/3 of the way through it.
