On the up side, there was wonderful historical information in them.
Really? I only have read the DaVinci Code, and that’s where I thought it was at its sketchiest–mostly because all its religious problems flowed from its unsupported historical claims.

What I meant was they talked about the conclave and other things like that. They also talked about where popes were buried, talked about the Vatican City, etc… As far as the “story” went…you need to know your religion before you read it if a person so desires. Then remember…it is just a “story”.

I read the book. I spent more time writing notes about what was totally, utterly ridiculously wrong & untrue than I did actually reading it. I could have written a book about how dumb it is, but several other people got there first…
Somebody wanted to use it in history? As what? A:whacky: horrible example???

I was not looking at it as a history book. There are way more ways to get qualified history. I’m just saying that for an upside to the book he did have some very good things related to some of the history. Yes, there was a lot of garbage mixed in there. But, again, you have to know your history and religion because the book can be very deceiving if you don’t. I also said it was utterly rediculous that “Catholics have it next to their Bibles”.

What I found nonsensical about that scene is that the daughter, who is offended by seeing her grandfather engaging in this activity, is French! Since when are the secular French offended by the sight of sex of any kind? Apparently she never turned on French television or every saw a French film.
congradulations… you just insulted an entire country… what an AWESOME catholic

Relax Cochease, back off the decaf. It was a joke. I’m french and I thought it was funny because of its essential truthfulness.

Just because people use “historical” writings does not make their books fact. The writings he used are one’s we read in my History of Chilvary class. Even my teacher who was not catholic by the way pointed out how these doc were too far fetched to be considered historically accurate. I have a degree in history and i will tell you one thing…Just because something is old doesn’t mean it’s better…This means just because a document is from the such and such century does not mean it is more vaulable then something from now.

God bless

Sorry for any spelling mistakes. Don’t have time to spell check!

I finally read DaVinci Code, I was too cheap to buy the hardback version but I finaly relented to see what the fuss was about!

It is a strange take on religous themes to be sure. What actually disappointed me was it wasn’t really that suspensful as a ficitonal work either - I kept waiting for it to really pick up.

I also read Angels and Demons, while it also has some strange religous themes in it (but there is a bunch of “facts about town” related to the Vatican, like the piantings, the buildings, etc. that is very interesting to me), I found it riveting from a ficitonal suspense perspective - clearly the better book of the two IMHO.

Maybe Robert Langdon (main character of these novels) will convert to Catholicism in a future novel 😃

the thing about the d’vinci code is that if it was about jews it never would have been published. but, catholics (and muslims too) are fair game. like the part about it on this site says, the equivilent would be claiming that jews had been murdering the decsendents of moses.
it’s not “just fiction” either. you dont say stuff like that in a book and then put a big “facts” (and boy is THAT a loose word in this book) page to market your book as a true story. i hope opus dei does end up sueing him for their completely innacurate portrayel in the book.

…if I don’t believe in it… what harm is really done?
“The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.”

Just food for thought.

Why do people include stuff like this in books? Was this necessary? YUCK!!!
Because sex sells. Brown is not interested in telling the truth, he just wants to sell books.
I have read the book and I enjoyed reading it. But I took it for what it is: FICTION.
I also love Lord of the Rings. But I don’t believe there used to be elves and hobbits running around the British Isles, either. 🙂
