It has to do with Karma, and the Wheel of Dharma, and two basic reasons for reincarnation. One is for those who do not become enlightened and need to keep being reincarnated until they do, the second is for those like the Lama who choose to stay on the Wheel and be reincarnated for the sake of helping those trying to achieve enlightenment, This is an oversimplification, but says it in a nutshell.

Enlightenment is a state of pure understanding, that all is inter-related and subject to Cause and Effect. One disclaimer here, I am not an expert in Buddhism and dont pretend to be one, though I have studied it.

I think the Dalai Lama is rather a pop celebrity. He preaches general, nice things that the Hollywood pop cult crowd likes, without really making moral demands on people. He has some good ideas, but it’s all pretty sugar coated so as not to offend anyone.

Not sure Buddhism specifies…Nirvana is attained and the cycle of reincarnation is broken, after that I am not sure what they teach
 
I apologize if I’m firing off the questions to quickly.

Have they come to any enlightenment on how this place/all exists?
I suppose they must have since they have come into pure understanding?

Through meditation I believe they come into pure experience.

As I stated, I do not know what Buddhism teaches on that.
