Saint John of the Cross emphasises that seeking spiritual sweetness is a form of gluttony, and that we need to seek spiritual purity first and foremost. He uses an analogy where the eyes of the moth is attracted to light and will lead the moth into a flaming fire where it is quickly scorched to death. In my thinking about this, I think I can see where we are all spiritual gluttons at times, and that we must seek spiritual purity before we can enjoy the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Come to think of it, it seems that our seeking spiritual purity entails the dark night of the senses, and perhaps the dark night of the soul.

The gifts aren’t always sweet - the scroll that is sour to digest.
