Just a heads up for parents regarding choosing comic books for their kids.

"As part of June’s mini-relaunch from DC Comics, we are getting a new ongoing Midnighter series by Steve Orlando and ACO. After his appearance in Grayson, it could only be a matter of time…

“Midnighter was created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch in 1998 for the comic book Stormwatch. Partnered with Apollo, they were a gay couple analogue for Batman and Superman and made front pages of international newspapers. Starring in the subsequent comic Authority, they were then married, before reality was reset with the New 52, they were integrated into the DC Universe and were no longer a couple. He also appears to have lost the spike from his chin.”

In my view, as someone who monitors the media daily as part of my job, it’s to make young, and even older readers think being gay (in terms of acting out behavior) is OK. It is a message that must be sent out and regarded as normative. I’m not referring to same-sex attraction. I agree that ‘sexual preference’ is a private matter and has no place in comic books.

An all around smart business move. DC gets positive press for being progressive. Their new IP also gets wider consideration than if it had featured a a heterosexual hero.

I think the real question will be whether or not LGBTQ centric stories will find themselves in a similar position as Christian media. In the latter case, the storytellers are often so focused on delivering a heavy-handed message about faith or God story itself suffers. If Midnighter remains the story of a gay character and not a character who happens to be gay, i suspect that Midnighter will have a very short run.
