The Death of Alexander VI is scaring me!

How Alexander VI died is giving me nightmares. Does anyone have any advice?
 
I cannot say because it is so freaky, and terribly disgusting. I am not sure I can post it here, so I will not.

When I read it, it gave me nighmares. Will God punish me like that?

I hope I don’t get banned, I am just having a hard time with it.
 
Catholic Encyclopedia says the cause of death was the “pernicious Roman fever.”

Young Person, if I was your mother, I’d tell you to stop reading this stuff. This is not going to happen to you. Did you read the Wikipedia description? That was really gross and nasty, and not a recognized authority on Church History. There are lots of good, edifying works of literature, sacred and secular to occupy your time. Don’t look for the gory stuff. This disease probably doesn’t even exist anymore. God isn’t going to punish you with a disease like this. Talk to your priest or your parents, but please don’t let this kind of thing upset you.
 
Well, from what I can find, he died of poisoning. It sounds like he had a lot of enemies.
 
You know what? This was a very long time ago. This will not happen to you.

Read something happy, like the Narnia Books, etc.

You are probably right. But, I wasn’t intentionally looking for gory stuff. I was just looking through the list of Popes and I stumble across Alexander VI and I came to the Wikipedia article. I read it and I got really disturbed. I won’t go there anymore…they say really bad stuff about the Renessaince Popes. One of the Articles says other stuff.

I know, I was just thinking about his death, and how it might have been a punishment from God, for his corrupt living. His sins that nearly ruined the Church. I don’t have any Narnia Books.

The wikipedia article was based on the out of print book: “Vicars of Christ: The Dark Side of the Papacy”. Its author was deliberately trying to create salacious and grotesque images in order to shock his readers.

I think there is a valuable lesson in this: don’t believe everything you read without question - always consider the reliability of the source.

Is he an anti-Catholic? What the article about Adrian VI?

You won’t get banned 🙂 Take a deep breath.

Firstly not all sins have physical consequences, though certainly they all hurt us psychologically and emotionally, not to mention hurting our relationship with God.

Secondly - these physical consequences are 99% of the time NOT a direct punishment from God. God doesn’t work that way. We do suffer the natural consequences our own sins and the sins of others, sometimes they suffer for our sins as well 😦

Talk to a good priest about whatever is troubling you, make a confession if you need to, pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet and a good Act of Contrition every night before you go to sleep. Remember that He wants to forgive you and save you, not punish you. Normally we punish ourselves. And His mercy is infinite as long as you sincerely ask for it.

And remember that you can’t sin by accident either, so don’t fret that you may have sinned without knowing it. Sin doesn’t work that way.

I wouldn’t worry about judging him. Its enough to recognize that he is trying present a distorted view.

I am not familar with all the sources of that wikipedia article. Some of the citations are from websites, which begs the question what their sources are. But I don’t have any reason to doubt their claims, either.

Thank you, its just that I get scared very easily sometimes, which is contrary to what is guessed of me at first look.

I hope they are all wrong. They speak horribly about these corrupt Popes. They make the Catholic Church look bad, even though I don’t think it is.
 
Do you guys know if the Renanciasse–can’t spell—Popes were really that bad?
 
I’m very sorry for bringing the topic up. It was just that when i saw a story like that, I was shocked. I never thought someone could die so horribly, and painfully. I hope I can get over it. But, thank you all who gave me advice. I have been having trouble with emotional stress, something that has been increasing overtime. I don’t why it is happening. Things like this would have never been a thing of fearful occasion, and it is terribly hard for me, but thank you anyway.

++ That’s probably because the Renaissance Papacy was pretty rotten - it didn’t really begin to pull itself together until after the Sack of Rome in 1527.

OTOH, maybe obtaining the Papacy by bribing the other Cardinals, or begetting bastards after ordination, or raising relatives to high position because they are relatives regardless of their age or character, is unimportant. Maybe it really is more important to feast, hunt, or fornicate, or to marry off one’s bastards to this or that princeling or princess, than to act like a Christian bishop.

Certainly he was pretty scandalous. A lot of the wikipedia article, however, is rumour and scandalmongering at best, downright malicious at worst, including the account of his death. It’s not at all certain that he died so badly - though to be sure he had a lot of enemies who probably wished he would!

God bless, you’re in my prayers. Say some for yourself, get plenty of rest and exercise, and be sure to see a doctor if you need one.

…then I guess the “coincedental” choice of St. Charles Romerreo was an act of Divine Providence…God looking out for his Church, right…?
