I am 33 and I have heard of various conspiracy theories regarding his death.
Is this all ridiculous or is there anything to it? It is strange he died only a month into his Papacy. Was he ill? What did he actually die from?

It is ridiculous. The conspiracy theories are from leftists who think he was going to invent room for contraception and divorce-and-remarriage, and from Traditionalists who think he wanted to restore Latin and someone was legitimately going to kill him to stop him.

JPI…that ultra-traditionalist condom user

Yes. I’ve only heard the one that he was against the Second Vatican Council and wanted to call a new Council and almost reverse the changes and language.

Oh I see. Yeah I thought I was agreeing with you on the silliness of this. But I see what the conspiracy says. Yes that is LESS crazy

Oh I’m not taking any sides. His death is somewhat suspicious I will say that. I just didn’t know much into if any of these theories had any merit.

I mean, the postulator for his canonization says natural causes.

And I just dismiss the motives. JPI was certainly an orthodox Catholic (he isn’t when you take him out of context). And nothing an ultra-traditionalist Pope might do…I just, no one is going to murder the Pope over the vernacular Mass and Communion on the tongue.

Also, the Vatican absolutely stinks at keeping secrets.

This is a nice article on him and his short papacy. His niece agrees with you:

At the New York event, his niece, Pia Luciani, recounted a time shortly after the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) when he was still the bishop of Vittorio Veneto, when he said to her the diocese actually contained people “of three councils”:

Those stuck at Vatican I, if not actually at the Council of Trent.
Those “who gladly accept the aggiornamento of Vatican II, seeing it as a grace to improve the relationship between the church and the world.”
“A little group who make the council say things that in reality it does not say, planning a radical rush toward another council that still does not exist, a Vatican III.”
Her uncle, she implied, was in that second camp, but didn’t want to just write off either the first or the third.

This book, first published just a year or two after the event, is a good read. I think the authors are basically a couple of journalists who patched the book together from newspaper clippings plus a few interviews. It’s informative and, from what I remember (it’s been a long time!) they don’t waste any time or ink on idle speculations about conspiracy theories.

Pontiff, by Gordon Thomas and Max Morgan Witts. This is the kindle edition:

Well, remember that there was the whole Paul VI Imposter conspiracy running right before JPI was elected, and then to have him die after just a month… I’d be surprised if people didn’t cultivate a few good conspiracies, and just said, “Well, it must have been his time…” 🙂

You’d figure that if the Holy Spirit inspired them to elect a particular Pope, that he’d have more to accomplish than what could be done in just a month in the office. I don’t think it’s too unreasonable to start wondering-- “Did they pick the wrong guy and God killed him off?” “Did they pick the right guy, but -insert conspiracy here-?” or whatever. It’s normal for people to try and make sense of the world around them. 🙂 And sometimes, when you’re trying to make sense of the world around you, you come up with some pretty offbeat hypothesis…

Yes it is all ridiculous!

I just looked at a picture of myself from 15 years ago and realized that I too have been replaced with an impostor!

I also heard a rumour that he was murdered as he wanted to look into the vatican banking, and there was a lot of corruption in the banking

Who knows

Yah. John Paul l was Pope for 33 days before he died. I can’t remember what year I think 1978? In between Paul Vl and John Paul ll.

Yes,i have a book about it.
Think He died from health issues.
Might check the exact details.
Thank you

Heehee! 😛

But look at your nose. Did it change shape and placement in relation to the rest of your face? How about your ears? etc.

I haven’t bothered to dig through photos on my own and draw my own conclusions. Maybe one is Paul VI and maybe the other one is a Totally Different Pope. Or not even a Pope at all— just Some Random Guy in a doctored photo, in whatever the 80’s equivalent of Photoshop was. 🙂

Some of their argument is inconsistent— like with the mark on the side of his face. It appears in some early photos, and is absent in later photos, but is also absent in other early photos as well. So who knows.

But just a cursory glance, without educating myself any further— I can see, yeah, noses and ears stay the same, even if you’ve been Pope for 15 years.

So-- here’s one I just threw together of John Paul II, one at his election in 1978, and the other from 2005, near the end of his life.

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

The angle isn’t a perfect match, but you can still see the shape of the nose is consistent, and its relation to the mouth doesn’t really have much difference.

Here’s another Paul VI conspiracy photo.

Not saying that I believe in it, or run around saying, “Hey, did you know—!”, but superficially, I can see why some people hold that belief, that there’s more change than just the passage of time accounts for. 🙂
