One reading in the Mass last night was from 2John. It includes, verse 7:

There are many deceivers at large in the world, refusing to acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in human nature. They are the Deceiver; they are the Antichrist.

Talking with a friend later he said he had concluded that this verse refers to those people who refuse to acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming substantially in the eucharist.

How should I respond?

“In his human nature” is better translated as “in the flesh” (as it appears in the Douay-Rhiems and Revised Standard Versions). It is the same word that Jesus uses for flesh when he is talking about the Eucharist in John 6:54. Based on this, an argument could be made for your friend’s interpretation. However, the immediate context of 2 John 7does not explicitly suggest it, in my opinion. So, while one can make a argument either way, it is impossible to be dogmatic about it and say this is THE interpretation.
