I would like to make a few comments about small towns.

OP, have you ever lived in small towns?

Indeed, they offer a lot of amenities to families.

But they are also notorious for gossip. It takes former city dwellers by total surprise when someone walks up to them, introduces themselves, and says, “I hear your son is having a little trouble at the school. My son was the same way as your son. Just makes sure he gets Miss Smith for his teacher instead of Mr. Johnson. She’s better with those kind of kids!”

 Whoa!!

Whereas in a city, no one pays much attention to a single parent with several children, in a small town, this will become “the latest” such as in, “Have you heard the latest?!”

EVERYONE will want to know about you, and they will spread all that information all over town! Even all the old guys who hang out at the gas station will know all about you and your family!

Does that bother you?

Even if the information is good, it’s still YOU and YOUR children. Does it bother you that everyone in town will be talking about you?

Most of these people are good people, salt of the earth, and they will come to your aid in a second if something bad happens to you or your kids. There are a few vindictive types that seems to enjoy trying to destroy the happiness of others. But most are good people who are just very curious, and love talking about everyone else.

I think it’s good to know this. A lot of people harbor all kinds of lovely delusions about small town life (Mayberry or Mayfield). And it is wonderful. But it is also not very private!

I hope this information is helpful to you as you make your decisions and plans.

I like small towns much better than the city. In the city you can’t get away from hordes of people, in small towns you can’t get away from people you know. That guy you just saw at church, you’ll see him again at the grocery store in 15 minutes.

Amen. I’m from a small town, and other people and their doings are one of the main sources of entertainment. A divorced mother of 9 would be catnip for years.
