Anyone seen this movie and want to discuss it? Overall, I really liked the movie although parts of the ending left me feeling a bit dissatisfied. I think Martin Scorse (sp?) must have a chip on his shoulder about the Church. He takes a couple cheap shots in the movie which were unnecessary to the plot and very frustrating for me.

I saw it yesterday. I really didn’t like it. It went overboard I felt. There is a point where the foolishness in movies just screams out “this is just a figment of someone’s imagination”. At that point I wonder why I am sitting in a theater when I could be elsewhere. This happened a number of times throughout this movie. At the point when virtually everyone shot virtually everyone else I had really had it. The story line went down the drain.

The anti-Catholicism was, as you say, Maryalene, totally unnecessary. Of course a dig to the Catholic church is alot like gratuitios sex. It’s humorous fun and popular to poke fun at the church. If it makes people laugh it sells tickets.

Imagine this twist in the Dinner scene; after Nicholson hands them the filthy sketch on the paper in thier booth the elderly priest stands up and twists Nicholsons hand behind his back (I was thinking of something more fitting actually) and makes him apologize to the sister. Now that would have been a fun gratuitous scene. It would have saved the dismal movie.

Maybe not to Christian like but I would have enjoyed it.

What was the anti-Catholicism in the movie? Can someone sumurize it please? I was planning on seeing it but I don’t want to if there is anti-Catholicism.

Not a great deal of anti-catholicism but there was was blatent.

Mockery of the sacrement of reconciliation.

And a scene is which Nicholson is being blatently sexually graphic in his speech and actions (he draws a graphically sexual picture of religious engaged in sex acts) directed towards 2 priests and a nun. Of course one could say he was doing this because of the recent scandal.

Although one of the priests (somewhat timidly) has a good comeback line. I won’t tell you what it was in the event you go see the movie.😉

Heh, we were just discussing this briefly over in the Dappled Things magazine forums. Someone pointed out that there’s two aspects of the Church exhibited in the movie: on the one hand, there are a bunch of cheap shots, but on the other hand, there is a lot of beautiful Catholic imagery, and it is interesting to see how one of the main characters, after throwing away his childhood Catholicism follows a path of corruption that eventually leads to… well, I don’t want to give too much away, right?

By the way, we were actually discussing, “bible based” movies. If you have any favorites, feel free to join us an let us know. You can join the conversation by clicking here.

Great movie! The last 15 minutes stunned me and the entire theater with gasps!

I read in USA Today this morning that it’s got a lot of Oscar buzz.
I was going to see it but now I’ll have to reconsider.
I HATE it when anti-Catholicism is gratuitously inserted into any kind of programming. It’s always treated in scripts as though it’s the “normal” and “acceptable” attitude.
I’ve noticed it a lot lately in Law & Order.

Great Movie. I think DiCaprio and Nicholson gave Oscar worthy performances.

They did rather tie up all the loose ends in the last 15 minutes, didnt they! Unfortunately there seems to be no reoom for a sequel!🙂

** WARNING SPOILER**

So do you think it was Damons girlfriend who set him up?

More Spoilers:

Absolutely! I think the envelope DiCaprio gave her explained the situation and told her to find Wahlberg’s character and let him know what went down. I thought it was a bit strange that Costella’s other rat came out in the end to kill DiCaprio, but I’m glad to see that Damon got his due. (Well, ok, it wouldn’t be very Christian IRL, but for a movie, it makes for a good ending.)

I think she must have given him the key to the house. It was definately a wild ride, Almost makes up for “The Last Temptation of Christ”

Well, it was an ok film. The thing I liked most would have to be…uh, “Shipping Up to Boston” being played by the Dropkick Murphys every 10 minutes through the film:D

All of the anti-catholic sentiments were given by the obvious villain of the story. It isn’t like the hero was going around mocking the church. Nicholson’s character was the epitome of sleazy and took cheap shots at a lot of things. He even drops the N bomb early in the movie, yet I don’t think anyone is charging the film with being racist?

I liked the movie…thought the ending was a little weak, but overall, I good action thriller. I didn’t think it was overtly anti-Catholic…ya, there were a couple cheap shots, but nothing really offensive.

I thought it was a great movie and it’s actually based on facts. James “Whitey” Bulger ran the Irish mob in boston for years and he was an informant; the police used to help him and give him tip-offs and he provided them with tidbits of info on the mafia. The film tells the same story.

However, the anti-catholicism was very unnecessary. It added nothing at all to the plot and would not have been missed.

What does everyone think about what Fr. Serpa says in this thread here? Specifically:
to pay for a movie that supports values contrary to my Catholic values could be a serious sin for me.
