The development of Lent?

I was chit-chatting with a lapsed Baptist freind before Chemistry class today and anyway what I was giving up for lent came up and he just said after a little while, “You know that’s not biblical, right?” and I was wondering if anyone would know a good reply about the whole lent thing? Thanks and God bless.
 
It is biblical. We are calling to mind the 40 days Christ fasted in the desert in preparation for the Passion and Crucifixtion on Calvary. We are to take a spiritual walk in the Lord’s footsteps during this time in preparation for the Crucifixtion and resurrection. It is a time of spiritual growth and renewal and rededication to Christ. I don’t know how you get more biblical than that.
 
It sometimes seems that if Paul didn’t write it, Baptists believe it to be unBiblical.

I’d ask him what he thinks isn’t biblical about it.

And Jesus said to them: Can the children of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then they shall fast. --Mathew ix, 15

Ask him what he means by “Biblical.”

Baptists use “Biblical” as a shorthand to avoid thinking carefully. (I don’t mean to slam Baptists–every tradition has shorthand words that they use in this way.) Tell him that yes, obviously you know that no one is described in the New Testament as fasting before Easter, or celebrating Easter for that matter (though if he’s a KJV fundamentalist he is obligated to believe that they did). Ask him what his point is.
