Montie Claunch:
I was chit-chatting with a lapsed Baptist freind before Chemistry class today and anyway what I was giving up for lent came up and he just said after a little while, “You know that’s not biblical, right?” and I was wondering if anyone would know a good reply about the whole lent thing? Thanks and God bless.
I’d ask him what he thinks isn’t biblical about it.
And Jesus said to them: Can the children of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then they shall fast. --Mathew ix, 15
And Jesus saith to them: Can the children of the marriage fast, as long as the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. But the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them: and then they shall fast in those days. --Mark ii, 19-20
But the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them: then shall they fast in those days. --Luke v, 35
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say: Do penance, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. --Mathew iv, 17
I came not to call the just, but sinners to penance. --Luke v, 32
