What does Islam say about the existence of satan? Does Islam believe in exorcism and demonic possession? What does the devil do in the minds of everyday Islamic people?

He is part of one of God’s creations, namely the Jinn (who have free will like we do except they function at a lower intellectual level).

Satan choose to disobey God by not bowing down to Adam when God told him to, claiming that he is superior to Adam because he was created from fire not clay/dirt.

satan’s plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you, with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah, and from prayer: will ye not then abstain? (Chapter #5, Verse #91)

and here is what will happen on the day of judgment to those who took Satan, the enemy, as a friend.

**And satan will say when the matter is decided: “It was Allah Who gave you a promise of Truth: I too promised, but I failed in my promise to you. I had no authority over you except to call you but ye listened to me: then reproach not me, but reproach your own souls. I cannot listen to your cries, nor can ye listen to mine. I reject your former act in associating me with Allah. For wrong-doers there must be a grievous penalty.” ** (Quran 14:22)

Allah tells us many times in the Quran of the tricks of Satan and how he will try to decieve us…if your interested just search a Quran online and put in the word “satan”

To my knoweldge, the Jinn have the capability to “possess” human beings. Personally i have never had an experience with this, but know of people who have. InshAllah, a more knowledgble Muslim about this topic can answer this question better.

His main goal is to try to divert us from the remembrance of God (gambling, drinking…and many other things). He tries to get us to worship other things (power, money, fame, other humans…whatever). He tries to divert us from every good deed we would like to do…he has many tricks.

He’s going to hell, he knows it and wants to have as much company as possible.
