So, the devil went down to the Grammys?
He was lookin’ for a soul to steal…

But seriously–what’s wrong with stirring up emotions? What’s wrong with feelings of joy or love or devotion? Or if music stimulates you to create, or motivates you, or even just cheers up you up after a carpy day?

I love sacred and secular music, but I don’t think it has to be one or the other.

stimulating one’s emotions just for the sake of stimulation is a sinful
No it isn’t. If it was then all athletic sports and most art forms would be sinful. Emotions are a gift from God, and deafening yourself to them does not make you holy.

Hallmark (both the cards AND the cable network) would be sinful!

To be fair, those movies are pretty durn cringeworthy…

It’s not stirring up emotions. It’s stirring up emotions just for the sake of stirring up emotions. Listening to music that just, as they say, has you in your feelings.

The thing is, athletic sports, movies, and literature don’t interact with the soul in the same manner as music. I think that might be an important point to note. But perhaps it means nothing.

Yes they do. There are lots of people who felt deeply moved by a great movie or book, and any star athlete will tell you about the thrill of winning and the joy of being praised for it.

Disagree.
If what you are really getting at is, music is often the backdrop to people wanting to have illicit sex, then movies and literature definitely also “interact with the soul” in that way for some people. Even sports could lead to such behavior, as many people using sporting events as an excuse to drink way too much (may be a sin in itself) and get turned on by either the sports players or some scantily clad cheerleaders featured at the game.

It seems that as Catholics we should listen only to classical music and sacred music.

Listening to contemporary music (e.g., Rock, Alternative, Country, ESPECIALLY Pop) appears to be sinful because it is mainly focused on stirring up one’s emotions. It makes no attempt to appeal to a person’s higher faculties. It’s a purely passionate endeavor.

Well, stimulating one’s emotions just for the sake of stimulation is a sinful thing to do. So, I’m tempted to say listening to modern music is a sin.

But I’m interested to see what other’s have to say about this argument. Thoughts, anyone?
Listen to the Moody Blues. You can’t go wrong there.:hugs::hugs::hugs::hugs::hugs:

Today’s “music” is anything but. I no longer have a radio. The only music I play are the Moody Blues and sacred music.
