What is CA’s view of this book. My understanding is that Raymond Arroyo on EWTN gave it good review. Is it okay to read or too scandalous? I am a convert (2000) and have been very confused by this Pope. I felt such assurance when I became Catholic that, as opposed to what I’d been dealing with, the Catholic Church would be a bulwark of doctrinal consistency. I knew the Church had made changes but as far as I knew it didn’t say up was down and down was up.

There is much I find good in Pope Francis’s preaching. However, I’m getting

I’m getting troubled by the disagreements I see among/between the Bishops and their teachings and I cannot see that Pope Francis has worked to clear up the confusion.

What can you tell me? Can I read the book? Is there something else I should read? What can we as the laity do other than pray for the Church (our most important job here, I think).

Just from the summary on Amazon, I refuse to give this author a dime. None of his accusations line up with the Pope Francis I follow, and have read about extensively.

Is this affecting you personally, in that you or your loved one can’t receive sacraments because of whatever disagreement is going on? If so, talk to your priest.

If not, it’s not really your problem or issue other than praying for Jesus to guide our church leaders and heal any divisions. I suspect such divisions are exaggerated when presented to the public by people who have an agenda in doing so.

The Church is huge, there are tons of people involved in its administration, and stories about alleged intrigues and conflicts with the Popes sell books and newspapers. If you’re looking for everybody in this huge Church to be fully unified and always 100 percent behind whoever is Pope on every issue then you’re going to be looking in vain regardless of who is Pope. Your job is to focus on Jesus Christ and your relationship with him through the Church, not to get caught up dealing with the Pope’s supposed issues if they are not like I said personally affecting you and yours.

Dr. Rober Royal talked about it in a column at thecatholicthing.com He said iirc that majority of the book’s content is true. Raymond Arroyo did interview him about this, among others. These are Catholic personalities that I trust.

Is it controversial, yes. But as Catholics we are not called to hide pur heads in the sand and refuse to acknowledge what is happening before our very eyes.

If you are bothered by the book, you can opt not to read it.

The title alone should be enough to put off any half good Catholic.

Maybe he’s a crypto Jack Chick sympathizer and he was afraid the Pope would send a Jesuit hit squad after him?

😃

I’m just wondering if it is either one of the people with whom the Pope “disagrees” who’s putting this out, or some atheistic journalist. I’m sure whichever one it is, the author won’t be refusing the money he gets from the publisher.

Whoever he is he’s gonna answer to this guy, a trained Jesuit assassin:

I haven’t read it, and it doesn’t sound like something I would like. That title is very off-putting.

A very faithful friend gave me this sound advice, when picking a book to read about the church or faith, check for an imprimateur. It guarantees that a bishop of the church has reviewed its content. I handed her a book once and that is the first thing she looked for.

I would agree with Tis Bearself here. Dont spend your time undermining your faith in the pope. Read a good book on the Eucharist, or on Mary, or another good, uplifting topic.

There are a lot of books published. Many have catchy titles. There is a finite amount of time to read. Read what interests you, consistent with your faith, and a well formed conscience. If you struggle, it’s likely best to choose something uplifting, or something that will strengthen your faith or your conscious.

I’d agree with checking for Imprimatur. However, unlikely Amazon has that consistently listed.

Personally, I would have no problem reading the book if it were for an assignment, but I wouldn’t choose to read it given free choice.

Blessings,
Stephie

A lot of info is fake news, if you hear something about the pope that sounds unbelievable, check the actual source.

I haven’t read it and I don’t plan to, but I understand that it’s just as much about issues in the Curia as it is about the Pope himself. Fr Z is conditionally promoting the book on his blog…

If Father Z and EWTN are promoting it then yes I will check it out. Obviously there is some confusion and division in the Church and if one wants to live in a coccon that’s fine but it’s also okay to investigate and see why these things are happening.

Robert Royal said that 95% of the assertions are incontrovertible.

He’s not a right wing nut.

If anything new is to be learned from this pope about being pope, it’s that “good intentions aren’t enough”.

He’s being run over by some fairly dark forces in the Church…the “lobby” for one.

He may have had great intentions…he still might.

But he’s led and caused and encourages by his behavior noisy complaint and backbiting.

Lots to clean up.

But Our Lord can clean up even this mess up.

And I agree…some of the things the pope says with respect to more pastoral concerns are almost profound…very solid.

But when it comes to philosophy, science, politics, and especially theology, he comes up far short.

“time is greater than space” is his idea of a life changing point. One of 4 that he’s distilled over his entire life time! That should give you a sense for his throw weight as a theologian.
