The Difference

When a non-believer looks at Christianity, I can understand how they see a horrible and wicked religion. And not just because of generalizations and poor studying of history. But also because of Christian doctrine. Think about it: would you follow a man who told you that in order to get to heaven you have to eat his flesh and drink his blood every first day of the week? Or that in order to be forgiven your sins you have to tell a complete stranger all of the most embarrassing and secretive thoughts, words, and deeds you’ve ever thought, said, or did? Certainly not!

But see, that’s the different. Jesus is not just a man. Nor he is just a Priest, a Prophet, or a King. He is God. He is the Lord. That’s what makes Christianity. That’s why Christianity is the supreme religion. God founded the religon. Jesus is the one in whom is the Kingdom, and his Church is the beginning of the Kingdom. No one else can boost of such an extraordinary truth!

Equally astonishing would be to enter a Catholic Church as an outsider, to see a whole bunch of people, young, middle ages, old, wealthy, poor, hard working men and women…walking up humbly and naturally to receive as Christ, little pieces of what look like bread and were bread half an hour previously, but because of a few words from a man in robes, now they believe is Jesus.

I have sometimes felt touched and humbled by observing the quiet faith of Catholics processing to receive Communion. As an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist, I find it moving, for instance, when a quiet hardworking man with hands calloused from practical physical labour, comes up with the rest. How extraordinary for a non-believer to behold such faith as ordinary Catholics exhibit!

“Nick” and Trishie. Thank you for this. It made me do a little soul searching about my own faith in the Real Presence. Do I take It for granted? If I have, in the past… I will be more careful in future not to. Because His Presence in our Churches… is truly the thing which sets the Catholic Church apart. We are so blessed.
