The Sunday Divine Liturgy in English PDF format is there anyone who can help me find it?

I attend my local Ukrainian Eastern Rite Mass and His Grace, Fr.Serge recommended I get it and learn it in english first. I am having a little trouble but I know my eastern rite brethren on this forum will pull it out of a hat for me somewhere 👍😃

Finally while I’m at it, whats the best way to go about learning Ukrainian? any books you’d recommend? Thank you for taking the time time to Help me

God bless

Has Fr Archimandrite Serge been elevated to the episcopacy? And does he serve in the modern Ukranian? not the Church Slavonic?😃

I’m not educated in matters of the eastern rite way of doing things, did you ask because I called him ‘‘His Grace’’?

Yes sorry he said he uses modern Ukrainian not Church slavonic because he said that the people wouldnt tolerate it 🤷🙂

Ok so the best I could do is I ordered a book called ‘‘The Divine Liturgy of St.John Chrysostom’’ which is translated from the Greek to English.

amazon.co.uk/gp/product/images/1432580892/sr=1-3/qid=1273840463/ref=dp_image_text_0?ie=UTF8&n=266239&s=books&qid=1273840463&sr=1-3

Is this any good to me?

You can read a similar version of the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chyrsotsom in English, that of the Byzantine (Ruthenian) Catholic Church:

patronagechurch.com/Liturgicon_2006/Chrysostom/Liturgy.htm

Since 1924, in the USA, the Ukrainian and Byzantine Catholic Churches have developed in parallel, so they have different form of the Divine Liturgy. SLUZEBNIK is the name in Slavonic for the priest and deacon liturgical book.

Other Ruthenian versions are posted here:

patronagechurch.com/HTML/prayers__liturgy.htm

I have also been hunting for a Ukrainian version online but have not found one. You can buy a reproduction of official 1988 Ukrainian Catholic Synod’s English (with sections in Ukrainian) translation of the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom. 1150 pages. ISBN 1-895937-12-4

If you are attending the Ukrainian Divine Liturgy, you can get the pew books containing the 1988 Synodal translation from several sources, including Byzantine Church Supplies in Philadelphia, ukrcathedral.com/byzsup/books.html Myroslava Demkiw, the wife of the rector, Fr. Ivan Demkiw, is the manager and very helpful.
The cheaper “pew book” looks like this: http://ukrcathedral.com/byzsup/books_files/Photos/IMG_6247_edited_edited_edited.jpg

While more expensive, the Divine Liturgy: An Anthology for Worship is a far better book with more material, including a much fuller selection of the antiphons, propers, music, and a great selection of devotional material such as the Little Hours, Matins Gospels, traditional prayers before and after Communion, short catechism, etc. The cover looks like this from the same site:
(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

So, is the book I ordered of any use to me then?

thank you for the links, I will get around to buying the books mentioned.

It will be close, but probably will have translational differences as well as possibly having certain prayers not used in the Ukrainian use.

Hmmm, I will show it to Fr.Serge, and see what his instruction is, but for now I am finding it hard to find the Liturgy close to home ( I’m in Ireland ) on the net, and its difficult for me to buy from the states as they have very expensive shipping charges usually.

The site Diak quoted I clicked on and strangely enough it does not have an option for me to buy the item nor does it give the price, is there a reason for this? confused

I also saw the Holy Shroud which is used in Liturgical use and I WANT IT lol hahaha wow it must be expensive but again it has no price tag, very strange indeed.

If you only want the text so you can read it you can google “The Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom” and find a number of places to read it on line. There are of course variations on the exact English since all are translations. Here is one and another . Here’s a very complete one in pdf, which is the format you asked for, including the part we don’t see that goes on behind the Holy Doors prior to the Divine Liturgy.

Both the so-called Jordanville Prayer book and the Holy Transfiguration Monastery Prayer Book include the Divine Liturgy along with many other prayers. HRM has an FAQ regarding mailing overseas (#10). These little booklets that OCA Department of Religious Education puts out are very nice, small and inexpensive but I don’t know that they have one for the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom. I can’t find them at all on the OCA website.

If there are Orthodox parishes in your area they might have bookstores with reasonably priced prayer books in English like the Jordanville and HTM books, if you really want something in print.

OLTV has a number of videos of the DL. Mostly they take place in adapted settings (during the Orientale Lumen Conferences) so the physical setting may be a bit unusual but the liturgies are properly celebrated, as one might as mission church when you don’t have your own temple to worship in. Saint Elias Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church has a number of liturgies on YouTube as do other parishes.

I’m not familiar with the book you ordered. It looks a little pricey but a translation is a translation, so it should be of use for sitting and reading the Liturgy. I can’t find anything on the author. Maybe someone else will recognize the name. Presumable at that price and 116 pages it has more than just the text of the DL. Then what the quality of that additional material would be, can’t say, can’t find anything about this edition. 9.2 x 6.1 x 0.6 inches It’s probably bigger than you’d want to carry into Liturgy. (Maybe it’s 116 pages because it has side by side Greek and English…?)

Hi there, yeah…I had no idea the book would be so big:D but its all I have, I suppose if I just photocopy the Liturgy from it and cut it to size a little it would be ok to take to Mass.

But I would like the exact and proper liturgy used. I’ll take a look at the links you provided above regardless, once I get it some way or other I suppose it wont be so bad.🤷::confused:

You want one for your very own? You will get one soon enough. 😉

Distance orders are taken by phone, you can discuss the price at that time.
Yeah but it cost so much money to call them from Ireland, and Money has never been my strong point in life, which is not something I am complaining about.

Well I just hope the Holy Shroud isnt expensive, do you think ( seeing as its used for the Divine Liturgy ) it would be disrespectful for me to buy one for myself and put it up in the house?

I think it would not be appropriate to have an Epitaphios in your home, except perhaps one painted on wood, but you should ask Fr Serge.

At the local annual Greek Festival this past weekend I picked up a couple books, one of which is the A Pocket Prayer Book It really is a pocket book, 3" X 5" X 1/4", 126 pages. Part One= Daily Prayers and Spiritual Help. Part Two - Prayers and Devotions for Confession and Holy Communion, Part Three - The Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, published by the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. I think I paid $4.00. We may get a handful to put in our bookstore. To me something this size, or the “prayerbooks” I mentioned previously, which are about 4"X6" make more sense than something larger. You have the large 9 x 6 book you already bought and can use to “study” the Divine Liturgy, but for praying it, if your idea is to bring something in print to Liturgy then it makes more sense to me to bring something that is pocket sized.

Again, if there are any Orthodox parishes anywhere around you that have bookstores I’d look there for something instead of trying to order something and pay postage on it.

Happy hunting. 🙂

Yeah I suppose you could be right, I’ll take the one that was given me in PDF format and I’ll print it to the size you mentioned and just make it my own and bound it in leather or something. 🙂

I praise God for the advice he has given me in this thread.

Silly me. They do have the DL in one of these little OCA pocket size pamphlets. I had a copy in a stack of books by my bed. PM me your address and I’ll send it to you. I can easily get another one at the Cathedral bookstore. The pamphlet was $2 and it weights a tad over 1 ounce, 39 little pages. It even has photographs. I doubt it will cost much to mail, tho it might not arrive until Transfiguration 🙂
