The Divinum Officium & Laszlo Kiss

A website is reporting that Laszlo Kiss passed away on July 11, 2011.

He was the Creator of the Divinum Officium website which has the traditional Roman Breviary.

I believe most of you are familiar with the website divinumofficium.com, which has been linked to our page ever since its own foundation (it is posted under both "Today's Mass: Missale Romanum" and "Today's Office: Breviarium Romanum", right at the beginning of the sidebar).  I personally consider it to be one of the most important websites ever created. Unfortunately, the author of this admirable endeavor, Mr. Laszlo Kiss, passed away unexpectedly on July 11 - may he rest in peace.

The website is available to be downloaded and was updated one day before Mr. Kiss's decease. The perpetual calendar on the website is surprisingly accurate and usually conforms almost 100% to the Universal Ordo, as defined by the rubrics in force for the 1960 Code of Rubrics (and, for historical reasons, also for the preceding sets of rubrics).

A priest who is a friend of our blog contacted us wondering if perhaps any members of our readership who are internet and computer-savvy would be interested in working on a project to repost the site using the downloaded files, so that the site may be kept alive and any edits can be made so that it remains accurate. Ideally, it would be nice to have other languages available in the future besides Latin, English, and Hungarian. The site itself remains online, but who knows for how long? Mr. Kiss wrote on the website: "I keep doing this in the hope, that a team will pick up the idea, and will use the computers in entirety to help worship God." Father adds, "I firmly believe that this is what he would want to happen to his website and to his work. Having access to the entire Traditional Breviary and Missal online is a great boon to the many priests and lay people who use the site as a very helpful resource for praying the traditional Divine Office to the greater glory of God."

I read this yesterday and was very saddened by it, especially as I had just been thinking that we hadn’t seen much of him lately. Yes, our laszlo was indeed the Laszlo Kiss who ran Divinumofficium. I do hope everybody will take a moment and say a prayer for the eternal repose of his immortal soul.

I didn’t know him very well, but one thing I noticed about him was that he appeared to be very humble.

The Divinum Officium was a major undertaking and he never even had a link to the site in his signature.

I would often see people saying on websites, “Yeah this site was created by some guy named Laszlo Kiss. Email him if you have any questions.”

If it were me, I would be proud of my accomplishment and you had better believe there would be a link in my siggy.

With such a great and balanced human being, we can only hope for the best. There is no guarantee, but come on… just look at his posts and hard work! 🙂 May the angels and saints rejoice as this soul is carried into His presence. Wow… to think that I person we all knew has entered into the gates of eternity. Who knows what joys he is experiencing? Say nothing of his fate, but know that God’s mercy is glorious. How could a person who prayed that holy Office so consistently, and brought others to it, have anything but the inheritance of peace and justice that our Lord promised?

He may be conversing with us right now in eternity’s uncounted flow. Rejoice for his movement into the perfect. All is present to him now, and all is known. Every antiphon rings in his ears in every language, and every reading and psalm and benediction surrounds his soul.

A very impressive website. I think he had another one which compared the 1570 Missal with the other missals as well, but I lost my link to it.

Yes, as GloriousOrder said, he was indeed a voice of moderation. He was very traditional (who but a traditional Catholic would spend all that time creating an online traditional Roman Breviary), but he would always chime in whenever some of us would insist that things should be done a certain way like COTT and the OF vs. the EF. We didn’t always appreciate it.

Maybe some of us can think of him anytime we tend to veer too far in the rad trad direction, as I myself tend to do.
