The Douay Rheims Version

Hello,

I hope someone can help me.

I have a document contains all OT and NT and it is DRV, and I am planning to write an online application to search verse from this document. Is this version good for Catholics to use?

The Douai-Rheims was the original English language Catholic Bible, and was updated in the 18th century by Bishop Challoner. Most DRVs have Challoner’s notes, which are unabashedly Catholic (unlike the notes for the NAB, for instance). The language is somewhat archaic (like the KJV- as a matter of fact, the KJV editors borrowed alot from Rheims NT), but I think it is more accurate in some places compared to later translations.

It was me who sent you emails twice…uh are you the owner of the site?. 😃 I am using your text document and last night I have started to work on the application - It won’t be as details as yours, but I think it will have main functions for searching - and the more Catholic Bible online out there the better.

Did you compile those documents? It really saves me tons of time.

I own three Douay-Rheims versions:
  1. The Challoner (by Baronius)
  2. The Haydock version
  3. The REAL Douay-Rheims
go here for the version that is version that is faithful to the Latin Vulgate - realdouayrheims.com/

Yeah, I know. I only wish that the REAL Douay Rheims was currently available in such a nice package as the Challoner version that Baronius Press puts out - they are a work of art! 🙂
 
how bad is the Challoner version? Is there any place on the Web listing its errors?

I am not the one to ask that question. When I do Bible study there are usually 4-12 different versions being referenced, but I usually use the NAB (we all use this as the one to read from) but I have been checking it against the Challoner and the Vulgate (and I was wondering why there were translation differences between the Vulgate and the Challoner - but I just recently found that site for the REAL Douay-Rheims and bought it.)

Have you read that entire site yet?
 
I have the Baronius Press edition of the Challoner 1899 Douay-Rhiems and I love it. I have given my NAB away to someone who is never going to read the DR. The DR is so much better and much clearer to understand fully if you take the time to look up a word in the dictionary once in a while. I say douay the Douay!👍

Just curious - do you own the CD or a printed copy of von Peters’ work? If printed, what are the pages and binding quality like?

I"ve just finished reading it.

I also noticed that ewtn also uses this version too.

If you mean that EWTN uses the original Douay Rheims, I really doubt that.

As far as the aforementioned site, Dr. von Peter’s arguments are extreme and at places irrational. He, without valid objective evidence, blasts the much more readable, practical, and beautiful revisions of the Douay Rheims, based on, at best, his sole dedication to his work, and at worst, his superstitions, perceptions, assumptions, or paranoias, and not hard, credible facts. It is true that he has provided an outstandingly great reference and resource to those historians, linguists, etc, wanting to study to original text, however, he has taken his onlyist viewpoints beyond proof, and into the realm of assumptions, emotions, and fundamentalist perceptions.

If you require the original Douay Rheims for its unsurpassingly literal, but unbelievably half-readible English translation of the Vulgate, pick his up, but don’t buy into his viewpoints that the later revisions are corrupt or inferior.

I have the CD’s (but I bought both the CD’s and the downloadable pdf’s)…I will probably get the print version as well, but it most likely wont be for a while, because I am trying to save up some money for my wedding coming up in June.

Wait…what? Are you sure it is the original in there, i.e. al a von Peters? I’d always thought it contained a Challoner revision based version. Can you confirm this one way or the other? Amazon.com lets you look inside of it, and you can get around the page constraints by doing a text search of something familiar.

Yeah, you’re right. My mistake. I know I definitely saw the original Rheims NT in an anthology similar to this…

I’ll try to remember what I saw it in.
