Did anyone see this on CBS last week? We caught the first half, and it was horrible. A lot of sex and witchcraft for a story in Biblical times. Disappointed in Roma Downey and Mark Burnett; and Cote de Pablo could have done better.
 
I watched it online.

Horrible. I was expecting an exciting historical drama. What we got was adultery, 24/7.

Bad, really bad.

Don’t watch it if you haven’t already.
 
I recall people getting stoned to death for that stuff. Not in the story…
 
I’m reading the book. The setting begins with the fall of Jerusalem.
I can understand how what is written in the book cannot be portrayed on television. Television wouldn’t give the thinking that goes along with the characters.
The book talks about the ruthlessness of the Romans and how the acts of the main character are contrary to the teachings of her people. How easy it is when she breaks one law to break the next, to betray her only friend, Sia.
I don’t currently own a television and have just started reading the book.

The Dovekeepers is Downey/Burnett? Are you sure you’re not confusing this with A.D.?

I don’t think Roma Downey had anything to do with this! You’re confusing this with AD which runs on NBC on Sunday’s. I recorded Dovekeepers, but now will delete it from my DVR!

Downey and Burnett certainly did produce this bomb. Why not do your research before denying it?
 
So roma downey and her husband have a show on NBC and CBS? I haven’t heard much about The Dovekeepers. When religious themed shows are bad - they can be really bad!

Since I don’t have a TV, I don’t know how Dovekeepers is being advertised–As a religious themed show or strictly historical fiction.
Historically, we know that Jerusalem was destroyed by Rome in 70AD. The story is about Jews living during that time period who are fleeing the cruelty of the Romans. They do not always follow God’s laws.
 
I read the book. It’s by the same woman who wrote “The Red Tent”.

Basically, the theme is–practitioners of witchcraft are cool and amazing and subversive and brave. Observant Jews are stupid hypocrites. Christians are some kind of cult.

Have fun watching!

I haven’t run into any Christians in my reading yet, but the Esseenes (who preserved the Dead Sea Scrolls) are portrayed as naive.
I have seen the ad for The Red Tent and it did not interest me at all.

Some of the practices that the author describes as Jewish practices appear to be more New Age than genuine OT practices so that it can be difficult to discern between true prayer, that which is acceptable and that which is not.
Yael, one of the main characters, does begin the story with a genuine comparison between observance of the Law and how easy it to sin. As the story progresses, the emphasis develops a decisively feminist twist, focusing on what women were allegedly not allowed to do and a need to rebel against those restrictions.
