Defining the core of nontransferable prokaryotic genes: the euryarchaeal core.

Abstract

If lateral gene transfer (LGT) has affected all genes over the course of prokaryotic evolution, reconstruction of organismal phylogeny is compromised. However, if a core of genes is immune to transfer, then the evolutionary history of that core might be our most reliable guide to the evolution of organisms. Such a core should be preferentially included in the subset of genes shared by all organisms, but where universally conserved genes have been analyzed, there is too little phylogenetic signal to allow determination of whether or not they indeed have the same history (Hansmann and Martin 2000; Teichmann and Mitchison 1999). Here we look at a more restricted set, 521 homologous genes (COGs) simultaneously present in four sequenced euryarchaeal genomes. Although there is overall little robust phylogenetic signal in this data set, there is, among well-supported trees, strong representation of all three possible four-taxon topologies. “Informational” genes seem no less subject to LGT than are “operational genes,” within the euryarchaeotes. We conclude that (i) even in this collection of conserved genes there has been extensive LGT (orthologous gene replacement) and (ii) the notion that there is a core of nontransferable genes (the “core hypothesis”) has not been proven and may be unprovable.
 
The origin of the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris) began with the domestication of the gray wolf (Canis lupus) several tens of thousands of years ago. Domesticated dogs provided early humans with a guard animal, a source of food, fur, and a beast of burden. The process continues to this day, as the intentional cross-breeding of dogs continues, to create the so called “designer dogs”.

The basic core was there from the get go that allowed man to make use of dogs for his own needs and whims; and for the Finches to survive by variation for different size beaks. Population genetics as Dr. Maciej Geirtych explained earlier allows for such variation within a kind. IDevolution better fits what we actually see than the word evolution.

If that is the case, why is “IDvolution” unknown by virtually all working scientists?
The mysteries of life have been unfolding since the pre-scientific days of the Hebrews and will continue to unfold and amaze until the days of colonization by Mars.

The word mystery simply means – That which is really there but cannot be easily seen nor readily understood.

The ending of a good “:whodunit” will have us wondering how we missed the clues that were there all along. Scientists also experience the same feelings of amazement when a “discovery” is no longer mysterious.

It’s easy to be lulled into thinking that all mysteries are to be solved immediately by human reason and presented to the American Scientific Affiliation for their unique approval. This is a common error.

The greatest mystery of all is the one which goes beyond the material/physical world of our created universe to reach the ultimate reality of God, the Creator. This mysterious reality brings time and eternity together, the finite life on earth with the infinite being of our loving God – a reality that all humans long for, either openly or silently within the depths of one’s heart.

There is no evidence to indicate that the “kinds” were the originally created organisms, nor the earliest forms in natural history.
Maybe not from past research. However, one needs to focus on the future to get a better grasp on reality.

Furthermore, one should remember that the mysteries of life have been unfolding since the pre-scientific days of the Hebrews and will continue to unfold and amaze until the days of colonization by Mars. This attitude of wanting to know everything immediately has led to many false assumptions. This common error often ignores the timeless philosophy of Catholicism.

Try Dr. Carl R. Woese, Professor of Microbiology, University of Illinois.
I had read some of his rather interesting work online, which dealt with bacteria and viruses. I am looking more for genome studies on more complex organisms, to see which groups had actually been sequenced, and so on…

Not sure what you are trying to say.

Is there any reason that you know of to doubt that prokaryotes existed before eukaryotes? That is my only point.

There is no need to unnecessarily complicate a relatively simple question about natural history with references to Hebrews and Mars, or Hebrews from Mars, and Catholicism for the future generations of ETs, and stuff. :rolleyes:

No: “mystery” comes from Greek “muein” or to close the mouth. A mystery is “that before which we remain silent.” God is a mystery, but there are no scientific mysteries, only problems to be researched and solved.

This is the reason I am interested in Dr. Woese.

The below quotes are from mcb.illinois.edu/faculty/profile/1204 The beginning of which is: “I am a molecular biologist turned evolutionist.” Since I am an evolutionist at heart, with the exception of the human species, you can understand why I recommended his work as a possible resource for your own search.

My work over the last 5 years has centered on genomic analysis, with an emphasis on understanding the evolutionary significance of the phenomenon of horizontal gene transfer (HGT).
