So I’ve been wondering about something. Are the Elder Scrolls games okay to play as a Catholic, with their magic and polytheistic stuff. In the elder scrolls one of the weapons you can use is magic, and it seems also to be a big part of the games. There are also multiple gods in the series, that the characters frequently reference. They also take their names in vain as people do Our Lord’s name. They’ll say things like " By the nine" because that’s how many gods there are. Is this offensive to God, and is it okay to play games like this?

It’s a fantasy game. It’s make believe. It’s a story. It’s about as sinful as young kids dressing up in armor and fighting imaginary trolls and slaying dragons.

It’s perfectly okay to play the Elder Scrolls games. It’s like Tolkien.

Morrowind!

Oblivion was my favorite. I have PS3 game but can’t seem to get it to work on my PS4, anyone know why? No backwards compatability?

It definitely takes getting used to. It was my first Elder Scrolls game.

I forgot to mention two things. First, the Deacon at the parish I used to go to loved the Elder Scrolls games. There’s also a book that looks at the series through a Christian lens. I can’t remember the name of it however.

I can’t wait to get a new computer to play the Elder Scrolls again.

Oblivion is also my favorite. We’ll see if that changes after Morrowind.

It was technically mine, but I played so little of it that I don’t think it counts. I say mine then is Oblivion. My laptop plays Morrowind without a problem, hooray modern computing!

Played Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. Have been playing ESO for the past 2 years with my wife. We are both loving it.

What do you think of ESO? I’m not terribly thrilled with it in terms of the quests and the like, but the gameplay is quite nice.

I like the questing. Had to get used to the different gameplay. After playing solo for a year and a half got hooked up with a guild and made some good friends. One of the things I really liked about MMO is that if you are struggling with something someone will usually come along and lend a hand. Also if you are starting out, most vets are happy to give tips/train, craft armor for you, give a gold piece or two.

Morrowind was my first Elder Scrolls game, and probably my favorite. In particular the lore is great in that game. Also the diversity of weapons, which they’ve since lost. Wish they would bring back spears. They would fit really well with my Bosmer archer.

I don’t know, I play Elder Scrolls Online, Magic the Gathering Arena, and I’m getting into Yugioh. Each one has their dark themes, but Catholics have always told me it’s fine.

I wouldn’t play Grand Theft Auto Online. I’ve thought of playing Fall Out 76, but who knows if that one is too adult.

I know harry potter is really bad, J.K. Rowling even used actual spells from occult books to write it. That’s why I’m so weary, I don’t want to say " well only puritans do stuff like that ", because there are limits. Especially with magical stuff.

Yah, I agree with you. I don’t play ESO very often or the other games very often and there is a little bit of guilt involved.

Harry Potter and Fifty Shades of Grey are on their own level of bad, in my opinion. Dumbed down writing, and promotes dark themes.

This world is tough, if you look around you, you see dark themes everywhere. Sometimes, I almost feel like this world is becoming too hellish. I do think this whole Covid thing is God’s way of waking people up to take life seriously. Someone shared a meme that was the effect, “God sent everyone to their room to think about what they have been doing.”

The Economic Downturn is inevitable and it is going to be a doozy. I see dark times ahead. Again, there are a lot of bad shows on Netflix and Prime and many involve the evil or the occult. I can’t do anything about it. I just don’t consume it.

That’s something I will say about the ESO community, very atheistic and very damaged. All ages play it, but you can’t mention anything about religion even in the most liberal way. The way is narrow. OK, I see it. People choose evil. All I can do is stay away and not get involved.

Yeah that’s why I’m so iffy about playing them. It’s like an " IIIII dooon’ttt knowwww" kind of thing. So it’s probably best not to.

It’s like Tolkien.
me, a Tolkien fanatic:‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎ REEEEEEEEEEE!

A slight overshoot. It’s a fantasy, yes. But works of Tolkien are very heavily rooted in Catholic theology, “a real mythos” if you will (of course with admixtures of Nordic mythology and Old English legends). ES are rather a cluster of many long-established fantasy concepts. Which doesn’t stop them from being an awesome game and one of the best RPGs ever made.

Also like other mentioned there is a weird occult things in the games, and this, too:

Well, it was the first true foray into a 3-D rendered open-world RPG. I remember when it first came out in 2002 and being blown away by it. It is still considered one of the best video games of all time, up there with Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Mario 64. It also pioneered game expansions rather than just additional titles under the same game engine like Warcraft III and Age of Empires.

Oh, I understand it was ahead of its time. I don’t mind the graphics for that reason (although I know there’s a open project going on right now trying to put Skyrim’s graphics into Morrowind). I just don’t like having to right click to open all my character and inventory menus. 😆

If I remember correctly, you can change the Inventory and character command in the options menu. After playing the other Elder Scrolls, I usually changed the commands to mirror the other games so I had a somewhat uniform playing system.
