The Elderly and Their Decision to Die

I would be broken hearted if my parents decided, close to the end, that I would prefer a larger bank account (by any sum, large or small) than time with them. I suspect most would feel similarly. If I knew that my parents were contemplating the hypothetical posed by the OP, I would want them treated for depression. Can you imagine the guilt felt by the children if they went through with it?

Now, that is not to say that I am going to force medical help when it is unwanted. That is an affront to human dignity. End of life choices are always difficult, but if a parent believes that they are valued less than than any sum of money, there is something dreadfully wrong.
 
There are many more ethical ways to leave (or gift) money to relatives before considering death. If they’re worried about a grandchild’s medical care, they could simply purchase a medical policy for them. They may even benefit from a tax deduction too.
