In The Letter to the Colossians, Chapter 2 Verse 8 states:
Code:
See to it that no one captivate you with an empty, seductive philosophy according to human tradition; according to the elemental powers of the world and not according to Christ.

Please explain the elemental powers of the world. :okpeople::okpeople::okpeople:

Well, in this context these are not chemical elements nor natural forces.

Rather, they would be the spiritual “powers and principalities” having sway over our world.

Reading different translations has often helped me understand a Bible quote, or sometime confuse me more :o I have searched for other translations and found the following first (which made me unconfortable, see the footnote):
Contemporary English Version:
Don’t let anyone fool you by using senseless arguments. These arguments may sound wise, but they are only human teachings. They come from the powers of this world[a] and not from Christ.
Footnotes:
2.8 powers of this world: Spirits and unseen forces were thought to control human lives and were believed to be connected with the movements of the stars.

The following versions are the ones I like to hear (which doesn’t make them right or wrong):

Common English Bible:
See to it that nobody enslaves you with philosophy and foolish deception, which conform to human traditions and the way the world thinks and acts rather than Christ.
21st. Century King James Version:

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, following the tradition of men according to the rudiments of the world, and not in accordance with Christ.

New King James Version:
Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.
