We have the world, the flesh, and the devil to contend with. (who goes about like a roaring lion…)In Joyce Meyer’s book Battlfield of the Mind, she talks a lot about our problems being due to Satan. Any thoughts about this? Does the Catholic position believe Satan is that active in controlling our thoughts and problems?
Every time we renew our Baptismal vows ( like at the Easter Vigil each year) we renounce Satan, all his works, all his empty promises, etc.In Joyce Meyer’s book Battlfield of the Mind, she talks a lot about our problems being due to Satan. Any thoughts about this? Does the Catholic position believe Satan is that active in controlling our thoughts and problems?
I believe that the devils do control us. I know this sounds crazy or even shocking, but it is true. They have ways that we cannot resist. Why? Because most people have little openings in their soul that a devil can use. These are little gaps and rips in the soul that we all “soul wounds”. We all suffer hurts and offences from other peoples words and criticisms against us, especially in childhood. But also in our love life we can be deeply hurt. It wounds our soul, and the devil leads us. That is why people go back to the same kind of relationship and the same hurt. Satan controls our reactions through our wounds. We have these “sore spots” and when someone touches it, it causes a reaction we can’t control. At the extreme it can even result in murder. We don’t believe he controls us, no. We do believe that he is indeed the enemy of Christ and all Christians. His name means “deceiver”. He would like nothing more than to further hurt Jesus by drawing us away from Christ. He does go after good people precisely for that reason. All of us should be attuned to resisting temptation and evil thoughts, the tendency to doubt, be led astray, and otherwise turn away form Christ.
The St. Michael prayer pretty much says it all…

While it is true that Satan is a ‘‘liar and the father of all lies…’’ who uses guile to deceive us not only into sin but into depondence and despair of the mercy of God, Satan actually means accuser in the sense of a prosecuting attorney.
