In The Book of Sirach, Chapter 32 Verse 10 states:

 Like the lightning that flashes before a storm      
 is the esteem that shines on modesty.
Please explain.
 
Based on a different (slightly) translation it might mean: like lightning precedes a storm (the thunder sound, I’m guessing), so does esteem go before a modest person?

Reference to one’s reputation precedes him?

Rendering my LXX fairly literally, “Lightning flashes ahead of thunder, and favour advances before modesty”. So, yes, I think that it is talking about reputation (and the effect thereof) preceding the person.
