“A person in the state of mortal sin should not receive Holy Communion until making a good confession,” this article says, giving Catholic teaching.
.
Saint Paul said “whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.” (1 Cor 11:27-30)

I find articles like this to be unhelpful to the average Catholic. Anyone who is in a state of mortal sin would not care whatsoever about what this article has to say. Also, someone may read this article and think it is their place to accuse another person.

The stuff in this article is basic Catholic teaching about reception of the Eucharist. I see nothing remotely controversial or unhelpful and I certainly see nothing that would result in someone thinking it’s their place to “accuse” another. 🤔

You might be surprised by how many Catholics do not know/understand basic Catholic teaching.

Absolutely. With all this talk of “grave sin”, “serious sin”, and the occasional nod to “mortal sin”, many people have no clue. For instance, many Catholics have the vague idea that the Church teaches against contraception, but they either do not realize this applies to them, or they think (or have been led to believe) that they can disagree and practice it with impunity. Similarly, young people nowadays have no idea that masturbation is, in itself, mortally sinful. “Back in the day”, this was almost every young Catholic boy’s bête noire, and having to confess it over and over again was the norm.

There is a school of thought, expressed here on CAF from time to time, that we do not know who goes to confession and who does not, nor what they confess and what they don’t confess, and suffice it to say I have my own thoughts about this. Communion lines are long, and confession lines are short. Maybe they all go to biennial penance services and I’m not there (pretty hard to go to confession once a month, or once a week, that way), or maybe they make appointments and go privately. Or so some would say.

This article is basic Catholicism 101 and there is absolutely no problem with it.
