Is it ok to make the sign of the cross after receiving both species? Thanks , Tim

as a convert from Orthodoxy that now attends Mass in the West alot, I feel like I have to sit on my hands to keep from making the sign of the cross during Mass. When is it appropriate and when isn’t it appropriate? Also, bowing: I’m used to bowing during incarnate portion of the creed, and whenever the priest passes in procession or swings a censor in my general direction I bow. Is that appropriate? No one else seems to. . .

Making the sign of the cross when sprinkled with Holy Water, when the congregation is incensed, when the processional cross passes (I usually bow my head) is just fine. After attending several Eastern Catholic Byzantine, Chaldean and Maronite liturgies this summer I finally got the hang of making the sign of the cross in reverse and at the appropriate times.

You’re actually the one who is right. If I’m not mistaken, the rules do call for us to bow (or kneel on Christmas and the Feast of the Incarnation) during that part, but it’s hardly ever done.

Isn’t it weird how a new Catholic like you knows to do this, yet those who were Catholics all their lives don’t? You converts are often more devout than us cradle Catholics.😉

and whenever the priest passes in procession … I bow. Is that appropriate? No one else seems to. . .

I attend a daily Mass in the West where there is no processional cross, but I do bow when the priest passes … he’s on his way to standing in persona Christi or on his way back . . . it seems appropriate to have the priest as the object of bow … the same way one bows in the presence of the cross or an icon. . . is that wrong? I also kiss the priest’s right hand when I exit for the same reason.

btw. . . in Orthodox churches, often people will reach out to “touch the hem of” the priest’s garment – sometimes even impeding the priest’s progress. . . so the bowing comes naturally to me. . .

That is so cool… a wonderful link to the woman in the scriptures who was healed when she touched the hem of Jesus’ garment.

I make the sign of the cross after I receive the Host. I also make it when the processional crucifix passes me.

One thing I’ve noticed is that so few people genuflect and make the sign of the cross when they leave pews after Mass. My wife and I always do, and sometimes I feel like I am going to get run over by people coming out of pews and heading down the aisle!

There’s not really any such thing as an inappropriate time to make the sign of the Cross :yup:

Personally, for example, I definitely do so at the elevation of the Host during the consecration

This happens at my church…As soon as the priest processes out, the people start filling in the aisle right after him and talking and the poor cantor is still trying to lead the singing !!!.

It leaves me scratching my head…I know that mass is over after the priest says it is and you can technically leave out the back but I guess it’s the loud talking that really gets to me the most…
