**John only includes the foot-washing at the Last Supper? His narrative oif the Last supper goes on for FIVE chapters (13-17). In these chapters, he talks in great detail about:This doesn’t address my longer, previous post, but let’s save time…
I have read all about the doctrine of the real presence, and the Aristotlean notion of substance of and accidents but Jesus called it ‘the fruit of the vine.’ To tell the truth is to tell things as they are in reality. Not what they appear to be…
Are you really saying making the following two claims as evidence for the real presence?
Talk about ad hoc, selective exegesis.
- Jesus’ calling the bread and wine His body (NOT as they appeared) at the Last Supper, demonstrates it.
- Jesus’ calling the wine the fruit of the vine (AS it appeared) demonstrates it?
Regarding John’s lack of mention of the Last Supper, I agree that the gospels harmonize. I’d just expect John to include that most important of events since He was actually present. Instead He includes the event but only the foot washing.
Finally, I stand corrected on the foot washing. I was not aware of that, and I applaud the Catholic Church for doing that!![]()
1. Peter as Chief Apostle and earthly Shepherd of the Church
2. His promise to the Church that the Holy Spirit would guide her to ALL truth.
3. Enduring to the end through faith and works.
4. And, at the end of his narrative, Jesus prays fervently to the Father that his Church remaining ONE - as he and the Father are ONE.
**As I said before - the foot-washing was only a small part of the bigger message: That we love and serve one another.
**As far as your point about Jesus calling the cup the “fruit of the vine” - this can be taken TWO ways, given John’s narrative. Sometimes more than one meaning is attached to a statement or prophecy. This is what is known as *polyvalent *symbolism. **
First of all - as I explained before about the elements - it WAS fruit of the vine (wine). Secondly, earlier in the evening in John 15, he speaks about himself being the vine, whereas we are the branches. The wine is the Blood of the True Vine - Jesus.
