The original eugenics movement that started around 1910 quickly evolved from who should not breed based on heredity, to who should not breed based on capability. And decades later, to forcibly eliminating undesirables for the good of society, to coercively eliminating undesirables for the good of society. And today, to coercively eliminating undesirable life via rights of autonomy, convenience and efficiency.

Amid all the talk of the enlightenment of our society in the past few decades is the reality that the barbaric practices of the eugenics movement of the early 20th century have simply been repackaged and reimaged into the barbaric practices of the early 21st century. Coercive sterilization is still practiced in the US, abortion is still legal, and the practice of euthanasia is becoming more acceptable as the barbarism of abortion is finally becoming apparent to the general public. Genetic screening is the new form of the same eugenic ideology of eliminating undesirable people.

All of the education in the US that goes toward social concerns like teaching tolerance of others, not persecuting others, and equal treatment under the law have done nothing to change what seems to be an intrinsic flaw of “enlightened people” to abandon wisdom in favor of progressivism.

Like a virus, the ideology of eliminating “undesirables” has survived by being reimaged as unrecognizable for each generation. How is it that the same ideology, I’ll call it culling for idealism, can continually evolve to survive efforts to eradicate it?

Because some aspects of it are rationally good ideas.

Like we vaccinated kids to eliminate polio, sterilizing folks with markers for debilitating genetic Illnesses prevents certain future suffering.

It’s not a terrible idea. These folks can still have families. Their children are just adopted rather than birthed.

So under your thoughts I should not have found out I’m a carrier?
Let me be clear, I am not referring to genetic testing that intends to treat the illness of whoever is being tested. I’m referring to genetic screening of embryos and the unborn in order to terminate a pregnancy when a specific genetic trait is found. For example, genetic testing of the unborn for Down syndrome has caused pregnancies to be terminated.

I think you just make another provocation…

Force sterilization for eugenic prupose is now recognized worldwide as against human rights.

And for adoption for people sterilized by force, in what world do you live??
Do you know that adoption is not a right, and the majority of couples who are trying to adopt will never welcome children in their family?
More you really don’t know that people are selected for adoption, and people who have genetic illness often suffer consequences in their live that made them “undesirable” for public autorities as adoptive parents (who should be heathy, wealthy, well-balanced etc…)

Not at all. Just an objection.

As it should be.

Voluntary sterilization should be the recommended course of action and governments should be happy to pay for it given the veritable oceans of money it will save them in future healthcare costs.

PBS’s American Experience ran a good show on the history of Eugenics. Interestingly the term “moron” was actually coined by the movement to demote the most capable of the “feeble minded”. The show goes deep into the roots of the movement. Removing genetic diseases from the human population had a salacious ring to it for some; but it was so easily abused. I think one could make the case that things like the Nazi party had their direct roots in such things.

Yes to all of those things … you can add racial profiling and immigrant discrimination to that list… as well as the caste system in the western world
