The evil eye is really about envy. It is more well-known in some cultures than in others, but even in pagan times, before christianity, people were well aware of evil and the damage it could cause and therefore had all kinds of folk wisdom about how to avoid the dangers of such through amulets and other various means depending on the culture. Much of course was superstition.
It’s true Fr Amorth does speak of the dangers involved in curses. It is more common than most imagine and very common in more pagan societies. Curses, the evil eye, spells, magic and what have you, are all part of witchcraft whether or not it goes by that name. Actually the ‘evil eye’ is a form of a curse.
Both the old and new testaments treat these subjects with frequency, take them seriously, and we are very much warned as christians not to participate or used any of these things or do them as they are evil.
Unfortunately in trying to shake off ‘superstitions’ of the past, the fallout from this new attitude is that the old wisdom of the Church that was common knowledge in the past is no longer being passed on to younger generations. Not that we should be running around wearing glass amulets
But there should be an understanding that there are still many people practicing these sorts of things and that they are very dangerous. That is why we must pray for and trust in God’s protection…but we are also to be “wise as serpents” and not put our head in the sand regarding such things.
Today along with getting rid of the idea of “the devil” secular society would wish us to believe that none of these other things exist as well - but they do.
There is more to the ‘evil eye’ than meets the eye (excuse the pun). Some ancient cultures actually believed that some form of ‘emanation’ came from the eye of an envious person. I would have felt this silly and truly a superstition until I actually experienced this.
A relative that was extremely envious sort sat across a table from me, and I bent down to pick something up and as I came up I saw a literal laser like thin beam of light coming directly from one of her eyes directly toward me! There was no rational or scientific explanation of where else this ‘beam’ could have originated. I was literally shocked to see such a thing and I have often wondered if others have observed any such phenomena.
I don’t know if I was supposed to even see it…but i did. It scared me to death and I now have a feeling as to why some ancient cultures spoke of ‘emanations’ from the eyes.
Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this?
