The Evolution of the Soul

I did a tiny bit of research on Teilhard, and I’m reading his Phenomenon of Man. I know he believes in the evolution of the psychic (conscious) part of the world as well as the physical, that as a collective whole this “noosphere” has some progress to make yet as it works toward unity in Christ, its final goal. He certainly believes that evolution has its culmination in human beings. I’m not exactly sure yet what he believes about growth in consciousness before human beings, though. He believes in the increasing interrelatedness and the unity of living things, but I don’t know specifically about “evolution of the soul” apart from humans for him.

I like how Teilhard incorporates evolution into his understanding of the destiny of creation. But I don’t think the fullness of what he postulates will occur on this side of the Second Coming, the New Heaven and the New Earth… the fullness of Redemption.

His writings haven’t always been accepted by the Church. I know the Church has felt he somehow challenged the doctrine of original sin. I only wish I knew more about it. I think how evolution is compatible with doctrines in our faith is something that needs to be dealt with seriously… dispite of all my friends out there who think I’m just too knit picky.

Does anyone else out there know more about Teilhard?
