The Exodus Narrative and the Book of Revelation

Is there any good Catholic thoughts on comparing the Exodus narrative and the book of Revelation?
 
I’ve never seen any comparisons between Exodus and Revelation. Do you have any thoughts on this?

The theme of the exodus is *very *prominent in Revelation - in the whole NT indeed 🙂​

 
The Exodus narrative is strong in the conversion of any Christian, so yes, it would apply to the entire NT. I’m curious, though, what makes it especially point to Revelation?

Maybe the answer is so obvious, that I don’t see it?

Had never thought to compare them before, but here’s a general, overall comparison that came to mind:

Exodus records the events (physical and spiritual) that transpired as the nation of Israel travelled from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the promised land.
Israelites were the OT chosen people of God.
The timespan in Exodus is 40 years, one generation

Revelation records the events (physical and spiritual) that Christians can expect as they journey from life here on earth to their promised land - eternal life in heaven.
Christians are the NT people of God
The timespan covered in Revelation is all generations.

To compare specific events in one book with those in the other would take more time. Do you have any thoughts, Hiromu, that you can share?

There was a seminar given by Thomas Smith called “The Final Exodus: Exploring How The Exodus Narrative Helps Unlock the Book of Revelation” at the National Catholic Bible Conference". Unfortunately, I missed it (went to a different talk).

I heard someone (not at the conference) compare the Trumpets and Vials/Bowls in Revelation with the plagues in Exodus. I will do more research and reading.

I would say the similarity is that the events they describe have already happened—Exodus sometime in the third millenium B.C. and Revelation in the 1st century AD (Nero’s persecution).

In both narratives, God successfully leads His people out of slavery and persecution and ultimately establishes a new nation for them (Israel in Exodus and Christendom throughout the Roman Empire in Revelation).

Exodus is more literal in nature, Revelation more figurative.

But that’s my two cents. Those who see Revelation as eschatological will have a much different view.

Fr. Alfred McBride gives a talk on Revelation. He also notes similarities in the bolws and the plagues. He also notes how the Trumpets try to “undo” what God does in the 6 days of Creation. The Trumpets cause chaos. The 6 days of Creation create things out of the chaos.

It seems that the “Exodus” is a recurring theme. Luke tells us that Jesus was talking about His Exodus to Moses and Elijah at the Transfiguration.
