Don’t feel frustrated if you don’t know everything that’s going on, that’s how it should be!
I’ve heard people say different iterations of this several times. Why is that “how it should be”? We are meant to be confused at mass?

We aren’t meant to understand everything

Catholicism is a religion of mystery- the Trinity, the Eucharist, etc- We can never fully understand these things. The EF strengthens that ability, so to speak. We don’t need to understand and respond to everything- sometimes it’s just best to sit back and adore.

What @Maximilian75 said, basically.

It’s not meant to be confusing. It’s meant to be mysterious.

Could it be explained to me if I asked someone competent to explain it or are the relevant authorities also kept in mystery?

Of course you could ask and get an answer! In fact, if you have an EF Missal, it has the rubrics. Depending on the missal, there will also be commentary explaining why what is being done is being done. But even with the missal, it can be difficult to know exactly what is being said, since the priest is often reciting the prayers quietly. The best way to follow is usually the choir (if it’s a high Mass), and to a lesser extent, the altar.

I would much prefer the EF, but the nearest EF parish is too far of a drive for my schedule. If I ever move, I’ll try to move closer to it.
