Hi everyone!
Wondering if you can help answer a question. I am a Roman Catholic however; I feel guilty and do not like receiving communion by an Extraordinary minister. I purposely sit close to the front so that I can receive communion by the priest in my mouth. Is it bad to feel this way? I know this past weekend a extraordinary minister ended up coming to the front and I ended up in her line up. I always like to receive communion via my mouth however; I put out my hand when I am in this type of situation. I find our church uses Extraordinary ministers at every mass and I feel that next to God himself priest not only have cleaned there hands put this is there devotion in life. I do not even touch the Eucharist before, I receive and I do not feel comfortable taking it from a lay person. Please help me understand. Thank you

I don’t have an answer, but I feel the same as you and I have been struggling years with this. It keeps me away from Church and I am really trying to understand. I am from the days of pre-Vatican II. Long time to struggle.

It’s not wrong of you to feel that way about your** personal **reception of Communion. As long as you recognize the Church’s authority to use EMsHC and do not judge them or those who receive from them, you are not doing anything wrong to have your own preferences.

Perhaps start with your Pastor as he will most likely provide the best answer to your question. Please be sure to tell him what you have posted here so that he properly understands where you are in your faith journey.

Finally:
A priest in our RCIA class was asked by one of the class if they should receive the Body of Christ by tongue or by hand.

Father’s reply (and I wrote this down and had him read it to make sure I had it right):
“… either way is fine and proper; however, I ask you this - by which do you bring sin into the world most: by your hand; or by your tongue? I for one know that I sin by my tongue more than by my hand.”

When asked about receiving from an EMHC verses the Celebrant or Deacon… his reply was:
“… why do you think that either I or the Deacon are any less a sinner than the EMHC? These are good holy people that fulfill a legitimate role in the Holy Mass in service to the Body of Christ when there are not enough Priests and Deacons to do so.”

My 2-Cents:
Yes I prefer to receive from either the Celebrant or the Deacon solely because they are the ordinary ministers; however, as an EMHC and Lector myself, I know and understand the role we are commissioned by the Bishop and allowed by the Celebrant to fulfill in the Holy Mass and will receive from any of our EMHCs… and yes, I know, that there are people that look down upon me (and other EMHC) when I (we) fulfill that role… “blessed are those that are persecuted for my sake…”

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

I’m a Eucharistic Minister and have no problem with giving or receiving communion by this method.
