Evangelicals ask “what are the two horns”? and they think it is usually nations or divisions within a nation that the literal anti-john-the-baptist figure will rule in the very end of the world.
Catholics usually don’t care what the two horns are.
Then there are Catholics that are mystics, who see profound possibilities in the apocalypse, who do not wave their hands and dismiss great imagery.
The ECFs prophesied that in the Last Days, men shall give astounding interpretations of the apocalypse.
let us return to the two horns of the false prophet.
If we are to be mystical, we must admit that even if there will be a literal false prophet at the end of the world, what does it matter whether he is the governor of 2 nations or 23 nations? That is meaningless information.
But I will show you a better way, the way of the mystics. The two horns are like a Lamb, who has seven.
Horns are biblical symbols of power. Where does Christ exercise His power, and WHY does He use His power? Christ uses His power to redeem, and the redemption is wrought through grace, and in Catholicism, there are seven primary sources of sanctifying grace, unlike any other: the Sacraments!
Tertullian taught that the devil plagiarizes the sacraments. He takes what is good and beautiful and twists it diabolically into a lie.
Which two sacraments would the dragon twist, so as to proclaim the supreme lie?
I say the answer follows intrinsically from the Catholic theology: In Catholic theology, heretics retain only two sacraments, baptism and marriage.
heresy means to take, and leave behind what you don’t want.
The two sacraments that the dragon would mock would need to form a SUMMARY of all iniquity, to be the supreme base lies from which all other lies flow.
I say these two lies are precisely the twisting of the base sacraments of heretics, so as to make them the “ultimate heresy”.
And how?
there are in the end, two things that determine all religion:
I. God
II. the Creation
A just man must have the right relationship with respect to both in order to be saved.
In relation to God, the person must seek Divine Truth, the Divine Will, and help from the Divine to find and live these as his supreme goal in order to be saved. This disposition is none other than the disposition implicit in baptism or the desire thereof, without which man cannot be saved (Trent, dogma.)
hence, the first lie is anti-Baptism: have NO concern for Divine Truth, nor the Divine Will, nor assistance or revelation from the Divine.
This would be the first horn.
The second horn pertains to the creation.
What is mortal sin? Mortal sin is preferring a created good to the uncreated good which is God. IOW, mortal sin is saying I would rather have the creation instead of God.
The second disposition of the just man is then about the creation. It implies the first disposition implicit in Baptism. For since the creature seeks the Divine Will and truth above all else, he must approach the creation from the standpoint of the just, which is to say, he understands that the creation is but an ICON to God, and NOT the final end. He understands that his final goal is love with God and not something in the creation. He sees the creation as containing symbols of mysteries meant to teach him of God and His truth. All the just have this disposition. This disposition is called SACRAMENTALITY: the creation and things therein is a sign post to God, catechetical, imparting Divine Mysteries.
Therefore, the just man RECEIVES the creation from God as a gift and seeks to use the creation according to the Divine Order, and understands that it is not the final end, but only points to the final end, which is God himself. Therefore, in some sense, the just man understands that his final destiny is to MARRY God, and not the creation.
Hence, the Whore shews forth the second lie of the dragon: those who deny the implicit call of Baptism, are in mortal sin already in intellect, and hence, not living for God, they live for the creation.
But they do not marry the creation, for even marriage bears with it the notion of love. The child of the devil, therefore, commits FORNICATION with the Creation, for they seek from it not Divine Mysteries of love that only point to God, but only TAKE from the creation what they can get from it selfishly, for purely brute superficialities and arrogant and ambition.
Therefore, the second lie of the dragon is anti-Marriage, the fornication with the creation as the supreme end of man, in place of the heavenly marriage with God, Infinite Love possessed forever.
These two horns are then the ultimate heresy: anti-Baptism, and anti-Marriage.
Upon these two supreme lies, derives all iniquity that the dragon institutes. These lies SUMMARIZE all spiritual darkness, even better than Catholicism’s seven cardinal sins.
