When talking about end times theology, people get so caught up in the person of the antichrist, but it seems I never hear a thing about the false prophet. Scripture gives some rather specific details about the antichrist, but the false prophet is spoken of in vague generality. Are there any writings from saints on this topic or any thing that could be of use to learn more?

I -think- it goes something like this: “he, the false prophet will speak proud blasphemies against the God of heaven for many days and many nights.”

I know of where the false prophet is spoken of in scripture its just that its very hard to understand his role. At times it appears as though the antichrist and falseprophet are the same person and at other times it appears they are different, but if they are different I have never heard anyone talk about this character and what his role is or how to identify him in the way the antichrist is identified.

I have some footnotes in my Study Bible that gives many details, especially interpretations from the Church Fathers and Medieval Commentators ocsb.wetpaint.com/page/Revelation+13

A new book called Unveiling the Apocalypse: Prophecy in Catholic Tradition by Emmett O’Regan has a good section on the false prophet. It argues that the false prophet is an anti-Elijah type figure who precedes the Antichrist to “make his paths straight”. The Book of Revelation tells us that it is the false prophet who brings into effect the prophecy of the mark of the Beast. This book argues that when transliterated into Hebrew, the letters www have the numerical equivalent of 666. The sixth letter of the Hebrew alphabet (waw) is used to represent the Hebrew numeral 6, and is transliterated into English as the letter w.

That’s not what i said.

As the antichrist will seem like the Christ, so the false prophet will seem like Elijah.

YES! Someone else who gets this! In Revelation 13, the false prophet calls down fire from heaven just as Elijah once did, and just as the apostles thought they would be able to do. It is my belief that this will be someone who sways the nation of Israel with military might by destroying enemies, impressing the world in order to make way for the beast (an international conglomerate with many ‘horns’ from which comes the ‘little horn.’)

The false prophect is indeed not talked as it is the anti-christ. What I’m gonna say is not from my head, but fresh recent catholic prophecy. Since these are the end times or the very last days, many people are having mystical experiences: messages from Our Lady, Jesus or St. Michael or they have visions, dreams or something like that and this was predicted in the Bible for the last days, by Jesus. The false prophet is directly linked with the second beast of the apocalipse, which is the Ecclesiastic Masonry and not just one man. These masons have for quite some time, chosen their leader who will replace Benedict XVI (feb 2012). The false prophet or also called the anti-Pope is the man who is gonna replace our Pope next year, which then pave the way to the anti-christ…all prophecy put together makes all the sense in the world; look at St Malachias prophecy of the Popes, or D. Bosque prophecy, then hear and read what Our Lady has been saying through different Apparitions. If you are carefull enough just to rely on approved apparitions, then take a good look at what Our Lady said in La Sallette and in Akito, Look at what she said about the state of the clergy in the last days…note that most clergy no longer obbey to the Pope, the great majority of them don’t even believe anymore in the Real Presence…
Read Revelations 13 : 11-14

Two Horns - means the miter bishops and cadinals do wear and it has two horns, indicating their filiation to the Catholic Church, specially within the high hierarchy.

Like a lamb - means that he presents himself to t he catholic universe as a lamb, like good shepards, but in fact are wolves. They are false preachers infiltrated in the Church to destroy it from within like a trojan horse. They never been catholic and are almost like demons.

Made a noise like a dragon - means that they have the same goals as satan, the dragon, who wants to destroy the Church iof Jesus, planting the the false doctrine of modernism and the false relativism of false ecumenism and, if possible, erase all christians from the surface of the earth. Yhey seek, in fact, to take all souls to hell.

Extended its authority everywhere - Obbey to the masonic plans and follow the same principles under the influence of this Ecclesiastic Masonry.it’s goal is to destroy the faith in Christ and establish the worship of satan. It’s to deliver the Church to the power of the anti-christ, leader of the great beast of the apocalipse. It’s to make people worship lucifer, and no longer God.

In fact, it is very visible the division inside the Church, which walks towards a huge schism never seen before. We understand very clearly the desobidience towards Benedict XVI by most bishops and cardinals in the world, sign that they have already advanced a lot with their plan of conquering the Throne of Peter. Rare are the bishops who are totally loyal to the Pope, applying in their parishes the documents coming from him. It might sound impossible but the great majority of our clergy doesn't believe in such schism and disobedience, worst, cannot understand it. They think everything is ok and poor them, they are so blind and obssessed in their own theologies. Nowadays we have to be very carefull with what people say about he Pope, because many mistakes and distortions come out of the vatican without the approval of the Pope.
The prophecy of St. Malachias does state that Benedict XVI is the last but one Pope, aka, after him there's only one more, Peter The Rock. Which means, Benedict XVI is the Pope of Tribulations and Peter the Rock will come towards the end of tribulations, where the Church will seem to have disapeared. This proves that there is no Pope between Benedict and Peter. Whoever seats on the Throne in the meantime will be the false prophect or the anti-pope and then the anti-christ.
According to Our Lady, the great majority of clergy taking part in t his conspiracy will be counted as non-sons and this specific cardinal, the false prophect, is one of them. This cardinal is another son of the tribe of Dan. This Dan was the son of Jacob and Bala, one of Rachel’s slaves. Jacob being the father of the 12 tribes of Israel. By t he time he was ying and when he was blessing his sons, Jacob said that Dan would always be like a serpent, a viper on the path (Genesis 49:017). Anas, caifas and Judas also shared this evil bloodline born with Dan. The false prophect and the anti-christ also have this bloodline. I say have, since the anti-christ is alive, in his 50’s and rulling the world, hidden…this monster, although he is gonna appear in the east like the Bible says, he was born in the west, with french blood…He is living at the moment in europe…

  1. But as it is incumbent on us to discuss this matter of the beast more exactly, and in particular the question how the Holy Spirit has also mystically indicated his name by means of a number, we shall proceed to state more clearly what bears upon him. John then speaks thus: “And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns, like a lamb, and he spoke as a dragon. And he exercised all the power of the first beast before him; and he made the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. And he did great wonders, so that he makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, and deceives them that dwell on the earth by means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast, saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast which had the wound by a sword and did live. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he caused all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand or in their forehead; and that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that has understanding count the number of the beast; for if is the number of a man, and his number is six hundred threescore and six.”

  1. “And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth.” He is speaking of the great and false prophet who is to do signs, and portents, and falsehoods before him in the presence of men.
“And he had two horns like a lamb— that is, the appearance within of a man— and he spoke like a dragon.” But the devil speaks full of malice; for he shall do these things in the presence of men, so that even the dead appear to rise again.
13. “And he shall make fire come down from heaven in the sight of men.” Yes (as I also have said), in the sight of men. Magicians do these things, by the aid of the apostate angels, even to this day. He shall cause also that a golden image of Antichrist shall be placed in the temple at Jerusalem, and that the apostate angel should enter, and thence utter voices and oracles. Moreover, he himself shall contrive that his servants and children should receive as a mark on their foreheads, or on their right hands, the number of his name, lest any one should buy or sell them. Daniel had previously predicted his contempt and provocation of God. “And he shall place,” says he, “his temple within Samaria, upon the illustrious and holy mountain that is at Jerusalem, an image such as Nebuchadnezzar had made.” Daniel 11:45 Thence here he places, and by and by here he renews, that of which the Lord, admonishing His churches concerning the last times and their dangers, says: “But when you shall see the contempt which is spoken of by Daniel the prophet standing in the holy place, let him who reads understand.” Matthew 24:15; Daniel 9:27 It is called a contempt when God is provoked, because idols are worshipped instead of God, or when the dogma of heretics is introduced in the churches. But it is a turning away because steadfast men, seduced by false signs and portents, are turned away from their salvation.

The false prophet is supposed to pave the way for the anitchrist. However, I don’t believe that the false prophet can be taken literally as a person. Instead, I believe it is probably what is beginning to happen now, in which society starts to decay. People lose the sense of morality and religion due to present culture such as music, movies and books that go against all teachings of the church, for example, Lady Ga Ga, Pornography, etc… People begin to see these actors and musicians as idols and want to act and talk the same way as they do especially the youth. The governments begins to accept gay marriage, and abortion, under the disguise of freedoms given in the constitution. Hence, this modern society can be regarded as the false prophet, leading people to believe in self and removing God from the picture. This in turn paves the way for people to accept and follow an immoral sinful leader in the future.

The Antichrist will seem like the Christ only to those who can not see the truth.
The Christ will seem like the Antichrist only to those who can not see the truth.

The false prophet will seem like a true prophet only to those who can not see the truth.
The true prophet will seem like a false prophet only to those who can not see the truth.

A belief is something that you use if you are located at a distance from the truth and thus are located within the zone of less than truth instead.

If a person sticks to a belief, they stick to being located at a distance from the truth.

Thus a person who sticks to a certain religious belief can only accept the portion of the truth that can be seen from such a distance. Due to maintaining this focus upon distance, if the true Christ stood directly before such a religious believer, then the truth would not be seen. What would be seen is an Antichrist instead. Believers can not be spoken to truthfully in a direct sense since they only accept what they can see/hear/read from a distance in time and space. For such people, one must speak to then indirectly, and do so via parables.

and if you are willing to accept it, he is Eli’jah who is to come.

Wasn’t Jesus’ quote in Matthew 11 specically about John the Baptist? How is Jesus’ words in Matthew 11 related to the false prophet in Revelation 13 if he is referencing John the Baptist as Elijiah?

Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent are taking it by force. All the prophets and the law prophesied up to the time of John. And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, the one who is to come. (Matthew 11:11-14)

I’ll have to look at the revelant passages at greater length but I’m not seeing the connection and think it might be a bit of a reach scripturally.

Predictions about the beast being an international conglomerate are not consistent with the Church’s teaching on the Book of Revelation. According to the Church, the beast - representative of satan and sin - is tied up in chains now and we are in the 1000 years now. The Church, as minister of the sacraments and God’s word, holds the chains even as we speak.

We have to be very careful here with out own intepretations lest we become just like so many Evangelicans and private intepreters of scripture with their wild theories about the end of the world.

I checked your the commentary on Galatians 2. Your commentary skips any comment on verses 5 & 7, how come?

Ga 2:5 To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.
Ga 2:6 But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man’s person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me:
Ga 2:7 But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;

For some who believe that 666 refers to Nero, the false prophet would be the Jewish leadership who were allied with him.

Thanks for the question! One thing I point out when describing my project is that it is a study Bible with footnotes, not a full blown commentary in the sense of disecting every verse. Often times I will skip over some verses if 1) the verses are easy to understand 2) if things in those verses are repeating a point that has already been explained.

As for 2:5-2:7, verse 2:6 does have a footnote explaining it. As for verse 2:7, it is actually connected to 2:8, in which the footnote for verse 8 is fully explained. As for 2:5 I felt that it was fairly self explanatory. I noticed that the Ignatius Study Bible also does not add a footnote for that verse.

here is the footnote for 2:6
2:6 seemed to be some thing: That is, they seemed to be of some authority because they had walked with the Lord and were present at the Transfiguration. They seemed to be of such in the eyes of those false brethren because those who seem to be something seem to be something to fleshly human beings. (Peter Lombard)
Here is the footnote for 2:8
2:8 Peter to the circumcison and Paul uncircumcision: For even this distinction makes no difference, since it was a dispensation of divine grace, except that the Jews, who by the ancient custom of the law were not allowed to associate with Gentiles because they had for long been separated from them by the law, were admitted to the faith in Christ through the blessed Peter, while the Gentiles would similarly be conducted to faith through blessed Paul. But afterwards the shared character of the faith brought them together as one. Indeed, they all worked as one, as is clearly shown to be the case by the facts themselves. In fact, even Paul called as many of the Jews as he could to faith, as he did in Corinth (Acts 18:8). And it is clear in many places that he disputed with the Jews in the synagogues. Peter also went to the Gentiles as often as he could and did not disdain to do so as with Cornelius. (Theodore of Mopsuestia)

I will explain this as best I can, being uneducated and having only simple logic.

The Jews are the chosen people. The prophet ‘who is to come’ and the Messiah will come from the Jews. Christians believe that John the Baptist was this prophet and that Jesus is the Messiah. The Jews, however, do not. Therefore, they are still looking for this prophet and are still waiting for the Messiah.

John 5:43

“I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.”

What the Christians believe to be antichrist, the Jews will believe to be the Messiah and equally so the false prophet and the prophet ‘who is to come’. This is not anti-Semitism, these are the words of Jesus.

Also realize that the Jews will not accept a gentile as the Messiah or the prophet, as a previous post suggested (which I consider to be very anti-catholic).

whatjewsbelieve.org/explanation9.html

Perhaps my simple logic is in error, but this is what I have come to understand.
