Hi!

Someone asked me a very good question which i could not answer, plz if someone know i would be grateful.

He said: The fasting is starting now at ashes wednesday februari 25 and ends at easter which this year is april 11, this makes 46 days of fasting, isnt it supposed to be 40 days? :confused:

Subtract the Sundays and the Triduum.

Fasting is not done on Sundays which are always days for rejoicing and celebrating Jesus’ resurrection.

Now im getting more confused, subtracting the sundays and the triduum only gives me 36 days, what am i doing wrong in counting?

But, my good friend, the Triduum is not a part of Lent. It is part of the continuous celebration started at the Mass of The Lord’s Supper on Thursday and culminating with The Easter Vigil.

I counted from feb 25 to april 12 subtracting the sundays and the triduum, that makes only 37 days of fasting, if we fast also the triduum then it will be 40?

Where am i messing it up?

After consulting the liturgical calendar, I find I have to correct myself before someone else beats me up.😉

The days outside of Lent are:

March 19th, March 25th, and April 5th.

I hope this helps.

Noo, it makes me more:confused:

Because then its only 34 days of fasting?
 
The only way i can make it up to 40 is by just subtract the sundays and continue the fasting on the Triduum Sacrum
 
Don’t subtract the Sundays!

Starting with Ash Wednesday … include the Sundays … subtract the three days previously mentioned which are Solemnities outside of Lent, and the Triduum, and your total is then 40.

My mistake was excluding the Sundays. A thousand apologies.

Yes that would make it 40, but why do we fast on good friday then?

Our bishop has sent us a decree that nowadays it is just the ash wednesday and Good Friday which are obligatory days of fasting?
 
Traditionally, Sunday is never a fast day.
Some traditional calendars I have seen have the Lenten fast ending at noon on Holy Saturday. Until then, they show every day of Lent, except Sunday, as a fast day.
Our TLM is hosted by the Cathedral. The bulletin for the Cathedral lists Ash Wednesday and Good Friday as the two fast days for those who follow the current regulations.

I did some research and it confirms what you say, that it is the sundays that must be excluded.

On the other hand just as bro. richard pointed to, you get the same ammount by excluding the 3 days he said and the triduum, the contradictory thing in that is, we are obliged to fast no Good Friday.

Had I read your OP closer I would have realized you were talking about Fast Days and not days of/in Lent.

During LENT, there is but one (1) day of fasting. That being Ash Wednesday (tomorrow).

During the Triduum, there is one (1) day of fasting. That being Good Friday.

Reference Canons 1250-1253.

This thread confuses me, but let’s get everything set straight right here.
  1. Lent lasts from Ash Wednesday (25 February) until the beginning of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday (9 April), when Triduum begins.
  2. The only obligatory fast days are Ash Wednesday (25 February) and Good Friday (10 April). The former is part of Lent. The latter is part of the Triduum. Therefore, Lent has one obligatory fast day.
  3. Lent has 44 days. Not 40. You count Ash Wednesday as day 1 and Holy Thursday as day 44. Don’t exclude any solemnities and don’t exclude Sundays either.

Apologie accepted 😃 Yes someone asked me of the fast, not lent, I know its only Ash Wednesday and Good Friday but he asked me about the 40 days of fasting traditionally.
